About Baba Israel

My name is Baba Israel, I am an artist, activist, and educator based in NYC. I am a father, a co-parent, a partner, and a caregiver for a mother with dementia.

As an artist, speaker, and educator for the last 28 years, I have committed my life to creating events, workshops, talks, panels, and festivals to share my work and to support and collaborate with artists, young people, seniors, and the many diverse communities of the world.

I have taught, collaborated, and performed in 33 countries around the world and have reached 100,000's of people.

At this moment in history, like many performing artists I am forced to evaluate my life, my skills, and reimagine my work and my creative process.

I recently recovered from COVID-19, my recovery process was transformative and I am filled with deep gratitude to be alive and a powerful inspiration to be part of the many communities who are trying to explore what it means to be a performer, speaker, activist and educator at this moment.

Like many artists, I am facing canceled gigs, residencies, tours, and education projects. I am managing significant financial pressure as a parent and as a caregiver paying privately for home care for my mother, also a lifelong artist and activist.

I am launching this Patreon so that I can use this time creatively and productively so I can be of service in these uncertain times. I want to use my skills and experience to not only create my own art but to support other artists and communities in the way I always have.

I have been able to adapt some of my work virtually and am currently supporting several regular zoom meetings that provide professional development, community check-ins, and artistic exchange with emerging artists, high school students, a community arts council, and in a mutual aid group made up of strangers from all over the world.

I am also creating content for google classrooms with Citylore and really trying to make educational videos that can support young people who are deeply overwhelmed, mentoring an artist in the UK creating a piece about her father, and collaborating with organizations like HERE, BAM and Culturehub to create virtual performances.

I am grateful that I have over 10 years of experience in virtual education, performance, and collaboration. I have taught beatboxing virtually in Mauritius, spoken word in Trinidad, and performed with an orchestra for 1,000 people in Korea while sitting in a studio in the lower east side.

Now that we are all connecting virtually, I feel inspired to create a kind of Virtual Venue.

With your support, I plan to launch new online creative platforms for performance, exchange, and collaboration. These will take the form of streamed concerts, panels, theatrical performances, open mics, and live-streamed series that explores topics such as activism, performance, caregiving, parenting, education, drug policy and prison reform.

I will develop new music and video content, educational videos, and offer training opportunities to artists, educators, community groups, and non-profit organizations

In the short term with your support:

  • I will be training and researching live streaming and virutal collaboration platforms such as Streamlabs and Livelab.
  • Organizing virtual meetings and exhanges with other artists, curators, producers, and tecnnologists to share learning, best practices, and challenges with live-streamed artistic events.
  • Organize training and peer share virtual events to support teaching artists and teachers in virtual education best practices.
  • Investing in equipment such as cameras, software, subscribtions, and green screen, etc..

In the short term, I will also offer Two weekly live streams:
  • Weekly performance and freestyle session featuring storytelling, and sharing of material from my archive or new work in progress.
  • Weekly streamed conversation with artists, educators, community organizers, and activists
  • Releasing content from both my archive and my father, steve ben israel's archive.

In the Midterm:

  • Developing online content that adapts my work as a teaching artist into pre-recorded videos that can be used by families who are struggling with creative support for young people.
  • Developing online content to support caregivers partciluarly those with dementia.
  • Training videos to share best practice for virtual performance to support other artists.
  • New virtual collaborations and performances, both streamed and video content.
  • New music and music videos

In the longterm: We don't know how long we will be in a state of physical distancing or perhaps cycles of physical distancing but some think we could be dealing with this into 2021 or even 2022.

I am proposing building a virtual venue, an international virtual hub that creates a platform for myself as an artist but also strives to create plaforms for other artists, for workshops, panels, screenings, and mulit-location performances and collaborations.

My hope is that I will reach a point where I can offer fees to guests, collaborators, and even commissions to create works for this virtual venue.
