About Backlisted

FutureBook Podcast of the Year, 2019

Backlisted is a fortnightly books podcast that gives new life to old books. Your hosts are John Mitchinson, co-founder of Unbound and former head of research for QI and Andy Miller, author of The Year of Reading Dangerously and it is produced by Nicky Birch of Rosina Sound and the BBC. For each hour-long episode we invite a guest to choose an old book deserving of a wider audience. Our listeners are committed, adventurous readers. As well as lively, well-informed discussion we include readings and audio clips of the featured author. Our job is to make you want to read the book.

We've started this Patreon so our listeners can help us keep Backlisted afloat in uncertain times. We love doing the shows and want to keep the quality high but don't want to depend on intrusive paid-for adverts. Even a small gesture of financial support will help us do that. It will offer our most loyal listeners a chance to hear regular episodes early, download extra episodes made just for them, and to make suggestions and ask questions directly to John and Andy. You'll also get an early heads-up about where you can see us live. Most of all, we hope it will make you feel you are part of our world. Because, increasingly - you wonderful people - you are!

In the four years since we started Backlisted, we have been amazed by the support and community that has grown up around it. Backlisted has been podcast of the week in the New York Times, the Sunday Times, the Financial Times and the Observer. In December 2019, Harper’s Bazaar named it one of the podcasts that shaped the decade alongside, Serial, My Dad Wrote a Porno and How to Fail and The Bookseller awarded it FutureBook Podcast of the Year 2019 - the UK's highest honour for a book podcast. And even more gratifyingly we have over 300 5-star reviews on iTunes. You can explore our archive of over 100 shows at

Here are some nice things people have said about us:

There are plenty of podcasts about the joy of books out there but few make you want to read the things quite as much as the rambling erudite Backlisted.’
The Times (April 4, 2020)

Bibliomaniacs Andy Miller, John Mitchinson and guests guide your through everyone from Marcel Proust to Jilly Cooper, entertain you with good jokes and send you to back to your shelves with renewed determination.’
David Hepworth, Radio Times – ‘10 Unmissable Podcasts’ (March 24, 2020)

The Backlisted Effect can be remarkable: second-hand prices of out-of-print novels suddenly spike; books are suddenly dragged back into print by revived interest; booksellers offer Backlisted-themed table displays… Recently, quietly, Backlisted passed a million downloads – not bad for a podcast so resolutely literary, so defiantly non-glossy.'
Harper’s Bazaar – ‘Ten Podcasts that Shaped the Decade’ (Dec 23, 2019)

'Part literary history lesson, part fan forum, Backlisted is warm, knowledgeable, often funny and never stuffy. It’s people talking about the stories they love in the hope that we’ll love them too.'
Financial Times ‘Podcast of the Week’ (8 Sep 2019)

'That Backlisted succeeds so well in that aim is really down to Mitchinson and Miller. They are not a double act, just two relaxed and knowledgeable enthusiasts who are excellent company.'
Simon O’Hagan Radio Times ‘Podcast of the Week’ (June, 2017)
