About Betty McGuire

I'm Betty McGuire, and I am teaching stress-management techniques in the Omaha community through yoga and meditation instruction. Currently, I am teaching one day a week in a youth corrections facility and am working to expand that work into other corrections facilities, alternative schools, and community spaces. I have drastically decreased other work so I can continue to expand stress-management programming within the prison system and within our communities on the "outside."

Through your patronage, I can maximize the amount of time I spend sharing stress-management with youth and provide greater stress-management support for individuals who face great challenges and live with chronic stress.

You benefit from supporting this work too! With your minimum $20 monthly patronage you will receive monthly stress-management tools from me in the form of video, audio recordings, and more!

I thank you in advance for taking the time to visit this page and read through the details. It's your solidarity with this work and personal commitment to collective healing that will make this Patreon page successful.

Chronic stress is an underlying contributor to the development of chronic diseases, it impacts our abilities to concentrate and reason, and ongoing chronic stress can result in unhealthy behavior patterns that intensify feelings of stress in the body, heart, and mind. Yoga and meditation practices are widely utilized as methods of reducing stress and supporting the nervous system's "rest and digest" functions. When I started teaching yoga to youth in the prison, all I could think was, "Damn, it's too bad I can't be teaching this stuff to kids before they end up in here."

How great would it be to put the youth prison complex out of business? And, what if that happened due to greater attention and care directed at the health and wellbeing of children who are stressed out due to the marginalizing disciplinary approach our societal institutions impose upon them?

Yoga and meditation offer tools that can support youth--and their families--who are experiencing ongoing stress as a result of circumstances that are outside of their control: socioeconomic standing, disciplinary actions taken against them, social pressures, neglect in the schools and/or in the home life, food scarcity, self-esteem, and more.

Chronic stress is a serious health issue, and I want to continue teaching stress-management as a preventative healthcare initiative by using these skills:

1. Yoga instruction
2. Meditation instruction
3. Wellness and stress-management consultations with facilities/institutions
4. Group or one-on-one health coaching with young people and their families
5. Wellness workshops in the community

By June 2020, I will complete a reflection leaflet for the 14-week yoga and meditation stress management program we are currently working through at the corrections facility. With this leaflet, the students can expand upon the themes we cover in class on their own time and go into deeper reflection.

This is work! It's a full-time job to study, practice, share, and teach stress-management tools and provide quality content that can be of some real use. I'm not reading blog posts and regurgitating random information. I'm reviewing evidence-based research, combing through ancient yoga and meditation practices, and studying under highly-trained and experienced teachers to compile simple techniques that are proven to reduce stress and improve health outcomes. This is a job. Your patronage will help make this work sustainable and ensure stress-management skills continue to reach those who need them most.

Monthly contributions of $19 and under
will receive a one-time perk like a guided meditation recording or a checklist of actions you can take to reduce stress in your life.

Monthly contributions of $20/month will receive access to a 10 to 15-minute monthly video with a reading on stress management, a stress management practice, and a prompt for personal reflection.

Monthly contributions of $25/month will receive the monthly video + exclusive monthly updates on the topics I am researching to develop the program content. These topics will include Nonviolent Communication, Restorative Conferencing, various traditions of yoga, contemplative spirituality, deep relaxation practices, and more.

Monthly contributions of $50/month or more will receive access to everything in the $25 tier PLUS a 60-minute initial health and wellness coaching session and two 30-minute follow-up coaching sessions. These sessions are designed to support you as you identify health goals and make decisions about how you'd like to work toward those goals. We can meet in person, over the phone, or via video conference. This tier has a 20 person limit.

Whew. Thanks for hanging in there with me through all that. And...

Please know that your patronage is an investment in creating new possibilities for people whose lives and health will be positively impacted by learning tools for stress-management. So, thank you for supporting this work and thank you for believing in it!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to learn more about this opportunity to support the community. Please be in touch with me if you have any questions about the stress-management programs I'm working on or this Patreon page.

I'm excited to hear from you!

Love and peace to you~
