Betty's Battleground is a blog about living and parenting with PTSD. When site author Elizabeth Brico was sixteen years old, she entered into an abusive relationship with an older man who had been grooming her since she was just fourteen. The next four years were a living nightmare: He committed every category of abuse against her, including near-fatal strangulation, violent kidnapping, sexual coercion, emotional manipulation, cheating, and regular beatings. When it was over, Elizabeth ended up with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Elizabeth found the courage to leave her abuser after she gave birth to his son. After an incident which jeopardized both mother and child, Elizabeth reported her abuser to the police. He was sentenced to five years in prison, of which he served four. Elizabeth struggled with PTSD, isolation, and addiction. When her son was diagnosed with autism at age two, she made the heartwrenching decision to place him in the care of family so that he could receive the financial and emotional support that her acute PTSD prevented her from providing. She battled heroin addiction for several years, before meeting her future husband while at graduate school for writing, when they began their recovery journey together. They now have two daughters.

On her 28th birthday, which was the ten-year anniversary of an especially vicious assault, Elizabeth attempted suicide. A few months later, her abuser served her with a custody suit. Her abuser's re-entrance into her life triggered symptoms she had believed healed. She created her blog, Betty's Battleground, as a way to work through her traumatic stress. After a year of abusive litigation, her ex dropped the suit, suddenly and without much explanation. Betty's Battleground has since expanded to encompass the experiences of other mothers, women, and people attempting to combat mental injury and illness. The blog's mission is to end mental illness stigma through the use of radical honesty, and to serve as a platform to connect members of the mental health community.

Elizabeth holds an MFA in Writing and Poetics and is a freelance writer. Freelance credits include Politico Magazine, VICE, Vox, STAT, OZY, The Establishment, Undark, The Fix, Filter Mag, and Talk Poverty. In her free time, she can usually be found reading, writing, or watching speculative fiction. She is currently working on a speculative fiction memoir, and is planning several non-fiction projects to help combat addiction and mental illness stigma. There are also some scripts in her future, and an epic fantasy trilogy that will rule the nerd kingdom by 2029.

Last, year Betty's Battleground was ranked 26 on Feedspot's list of top 75 PTSD blogs, and celebrated its one year anniversary on January 23, 2018. Despite these accomplishments, Elizabeth is struggling to regain custody of her daughters after she moved her family to Florida to help her husband recover from a mental health breakdown. Florida has a notoriously corrupt child services system, and now that she is trapped in it, she is sinking under constant expenses. She can't keep Betty's Battleground going without your support.
