About Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band

We Just Wanna Make Music and Friends
Thanks so much for supporting hand made music! A band like us would have nothing if it wasn’t for our devoted fans. We appreciate every one of you. With this Patreon page we are offering you the chance to sign up for a Big Damn Band monthly subscription. Here you will get all kinds of extra goodies and activities. Things like early access to Big Damn Band news and events, live steam performances, sneak peaks at unreleased recordings and access to exclusive content that won’t make it to Facebook, Instagram or YouTube. As well as other unique merchandise and Big Damn Band memorabilia that can’t be found anywhere else.

We want to make this Patreon an interactive fan experience. A place where you can personally help us evolve as a band. Cast your vote in Big Damn polls which will help us decide the direction of future projects. And take part in live Q&A sessions with the band and crew.

Since you are kind enough to consider sharing a bit of your hard earned money with us, we want to be as honest as we can with you. Here is why we could use your help…

Everybody’s Getting Paid But Us
We ain’t getting rich out here. Not even close. Frankly, it can be a struggle just to get all the bills paid. And believe it or not, many professional musicians are in the same boat. We do this because we love to create and share our music with the world. And because honestly, it’s all we know at this point. It is our passion and we will do whatever it takes to get our music out there.

The music industry has drastically changed over the last couple decades. The advent of the world wide web has completely changed the game in ways that most artists could not have imagined. In some respects it has been a great thing. The internet has afforded creators the opportunity to easily share their art with fans all over the world. No doubt, it has been great for fans and consumers. Back in the day when a person wanted to hear a certain song, they would have to go out and buy the record. But them old days are gone. Now anyone can stream a song or even entire albums on the internet for free. Or close to it. You can watch almost any video online for virtually no cost. But it’s no secret that the streaming services don’t pay artists what they deserve. We literally only get fractions of pennies for these plays. If that.

So then, how do artists get paid these days? Good question. For us, the only way to survive is by touring hard throughout the year to play shows all over the world. It’s the life we love, but it is not an easy way. And after you do the math, we ain’t making much money.

Next time we (or basically any one of your favorite bands) come to your town, consider this: It is the music industry standard that booking agents get 10% of the money made from each show. And management fees are 15% of virtually every dollar we earn. So 25% of the nights paycheck instantly goes into the pockets of booking and management. Not that they don’t deserve it. They do a lot for bands like us. But that’s 25% of the gross amount, not net. Meaning all of the basic touring expenses are the responsibility of the artist. So things like hotels (at least two rooms EVERY night), food (hopefully not entirely fast food), fuel (for a fifteen passenger van and trailer), van and trailer maintenance/repairs (maybe you are aware of how often we break down) and the wages for our loyal road crew come out of our own pockets and are not funded by record labels or management. And when we are on tour outside of the country, expenses are even higher because we have to hire a driver and rent a van and gear everyday. The margins are very thin out here, folks.

And sometimes you sign a crummy distribution deal. And that crooked company keeps all of your digital royalties for themselves and they end up swindling you out of about $20,000. Or sometimes your booking agent (ahem, former booking agent) keeps way more than their share and slowly steals thousands of dollars out of your pockets. And sometimes you get booked for a popular festival and the promoter just does not pay you. Sometimes a global pandemic breaks out and music venues all over the world shut down. It sounds like we have been extremely unlucky but unfortunately these kinds of things happen often in the music industry (well maybe not the pandemic part). Because what is a small business like us gonna do about it? We don’t have the time or money to be caught up in court for months on end. We push on, motivated by the support of the devoted Big Damn Fanbase which we have built up the hard way - by touring full time for almost 15 years.

We Deserve a Happy Ending
But enough of this pity party. There is good news! In this wild, modern, internet age in which we live, it is easier than ever for artists and fans to stay directly connected. To help each other out and even collaborate on projects together.

We have set up a tier system so that fans can easily choose how much they can afford and exactly how involved they want to be. Everything from a $1 level which gives you access to our Patreon feed including live Q&As, monthly music videos and polls. Or higher tiers that get you things like backstage access or even a Big Damn Band show at your house! There is something for everybody. However you can help, we are very grateful. Thank you.
