About Black Dirt Studio

Welcome to the great experiment of the 20s!

Black Dirt Studio, after 15 years of the traditional "artist / label pays a rate; gets a fixed amount of time in the studio" approach to business, is trying something new...

Things have changed drastically in the last decade and a half in the music industry. Primarily, streaming services and the (relative) death of a physical format has put a hurting on budgets. More and more sessions are being done over "long weekends" and there is less time for reflection and introspection upon what is documented, never mind stretching out, exploring and trying new things in the studio. Projects are funded more than ever by the artists themselves and when label budgets are available, they're usually at the bare minimum for getting a finished album's worth of material. It's time to try something new...

I've set a goal of $2000 per month here on Patreon - if that goal is reached I would stop charging for studio use. This would then allow musicians to continue to work on their recorded music until they were satisfied with the results rather than until an arbitrary minuscule budget ran out. In the meantime, until that number is reached, whatever amount of money you, the patrons, would offer each month would be applied to extending transactional sessions - free tracking or mixing days - and I would match that same amount of free time on my own.

In this way the burden of the cost of making a record would be shifted from solely being on the artist and / or label to include the listener. As many people's personal budgets for purchasing music have been greatly diminished by streaming services / YouTube / etc this small amount would have a greater direct impact on the recording process than even purchasing more physical merchandise would.

It's a systemic shift, rather than a reach back towards the past. Things are not changing; there's not a new format on the horizon to set things back the way they were. To paraphrase a wise artist and frequent collaborator of the studio - For thousands of years music was something shared between people. Then for a brief blip from the mid-20th century into the next it was a commodity. It feels like it is changing into something new.

For the patrons, besides the good feels associated with helping amazingly creative people continue to be both of those things, there will also be a number planned benefits which will include giveaways of new and archival records, studio merch, exclusive digital patron only tracks, in-session band interviews, in-studio events, and more...

Below is an abbreviated list of some of the artists the studio has had the honor of working with over the years...
Ed Askew, Birds of Maya, The Black Twig Pickers, Blues Control, Nathan Bowles, Tom Carter, Charalambides, Michael Chapman, Hans Chew, Loren Connors, Deer Tick, Elkhorn, Jake Xerxes Fussell, Garcia Peoples, Steve Gunn, Laraaji, Sarah Louise, NNCK, Bill Orcutt, Pigeons, Purling Hiss, Rangda, Shilpa Ray, Jack Rose, D Charles Speer & the Helix, Sidi Toure, Sunburned Hand of the Man, and many, many others...
