About

What is Bluecherry?

Bluecherry is an open source Debian / Ubuntu / CentOS based Linux video surveillance application that supports network (IP) cameras. The Bluecherry software has a low memory footprint, supports ONVIF, and issues GPU for motion detection. This means that a lower end server with a supported GPU (embedded Intel graphics for example) can support multiple streams with low CPU usage.

Bluecherry has both a web view for configuration and live viewing with a multi-operating system client (Linux, Windows, OSX). Bluecherry can easily be installed in a virtual machine for testing or deployment and upgraded via standard distribution upgrade methods (ie – no binary blobs to replace manually).

If funding exceeds $750 we will implement the following in Version 3:

  • GPU support (VA-API) for motion detection in bc-server (this allows a newer Intel Atom's to support 16+ cameras with very low CPU usage)
  • Finish sub-stream for client live view
  • Enable hardware acceleration where possible in MJPEG/MP4 streams for web UI live view. (Currently bc-server starts ffmpeg in the background which consumes CPU significantly)
  • Add checks for hardware acceleration availability (VA-API), auto-detection of suitable GPU device
