Hey All!

We're Bow & Hammer, representing two friends Kathryn Satoh, violin and Elizabeth Newkirk, piano, performing violin and piano repertoire together (read more about us here).

Bow & Hammer
We program (often underrepresented) works from all musical eras that highlight the relationship between our two opposing instruments (violin & piano).
We explore how individual components with diverse identities can work symbiotically to create an unforgettable performance.

We believe investing in camaraderie between diverse industries is critical to sustain a healthy community of artists and concertgoers.

We build a new perspective of chamber music through our community by stripping away preconceptions of collaboration in classical music and focusing on the communicative power of performance and social support.

While performing music, we offer the ideology that prioritizing mutual respect for differences and time to develop genuine dialogue creates products with unmatchable impact on society that sustain and affirm our invested energy.

FOR EXAMPLE:
IndustryNight was originally developed in 2014 for those often obligated to work during the weekends. A casual performance series reaching beyond the music industry, Bow & Hammer collaborates with varying small businesses to offer a casual and interactive evening of music, community, and camaraderie. Held in Bow & Hammer’s rehearsal space, IndustryNight is an intimate and casual performance series that envelopes the audience into a “unique and fun music experience unlike any other in Chicago.”

Élevé, Bow & Hammer’s second series, was curated in 2016. This residency at Ovation Chicago collaborates with Rhine Hall Distillery and includes other artistic performers to create diverse and eclectic programs, elevating the concert experience to “another world-one of magic and story”. Élevé has been featured in the Chicago Sun-Times, WFMT (Chicago’s Classical Radio Station), SCAPIRadio, and the Chicago Tribune. We have featured visual artists, poets, actors, and other instrumentalists to create these one-of-a-kind evenings.

Chamber Sundays at The Promontory adds to the venue’s already diverse programming collection in Hyde Park, Chicago. Bow & Hammer presents a 60-minute interactive classical music concert each month, boosting the normalcy and popularity of classical music programs amongst other musical genres in mainstream venues.
