Hello, I'm Brad Beaulieu, author of The Winds of Khalakovo and Twelve Kings in Sharakhai. My novels have garnered many accolades and most anticipated lists, including two Hotties–the Debut of the Year and Best New Voice–on Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist, a Gemmell Morningstar Award nomination for The Winds of Khalakovo, and twenty-five "Best of 2015" lists for Twelve Kings in Sharakhai.

I was recently part of a "resource action" at my prior job. You can read more about the gory details on my blog. The good news is that my writing has gained a lot of traction over the past few years, and things are looking good in the coming years as well. So I'm looking at this change in fortune as the universe telling me I need to start writing full-time.

For those who don't know, writing is a spectacularly unsteady source of income. I have a number of books written and more under contract that I'll write over the next several years, but there's no guarantee that those things are going to provide steady income in the coming years. In fact, it's pretty safe to say that it won't be steady income. Just take a peek at my blog post showing my writing income from the past several years.

My future writing income doesn't look quite so wild as that, but even so, there's a lot of unpredictability. Even the books under contract aren't guaranteed. The publishers could drop them, or ask for a different book from me, creating a large gap and a potential drop in income.

So I've decided to start a Patreon as a way of providing more stability. The primary goal of the Patreon would be to create more fiction, to share some of it early with backers, and to provide writing tips along the way.

That's where you come in.

Primarily, I'm hoping to write faster. And if I'm able to focus on writing exclusively, I'm confident I'll be able to do that. The cool thing about this Patreon is that there are several ways you can benefit beyond having more of my books in stores.

One of the cooler ones is that I'll be providing sneak peeks of my current writing projects. In the rewards section you'll see some levels that will get you a look at some of my in-progress writing, and more levels that will see you getting the print books (ARCs and author copies) well before they're published. I'm also going to do a few mini-projects that I've been hoping to get into but haven't because, well, day job.

I really enjoy talking about the ins and outs of writing, what makes it tick, how and why we react to it, and so on. In that vein, I'm going to start working on short writing videos that show how I write, some insights into writing technique, and that will lead to more extensive talks that I'll occasionally give online or in person at various events. I may even have an interview or two.

In the short term, I have A Veil of Spears, the third book in the Song of the Shattered Sands series, to finish. I'll also be editing the second book, With Blood Upon the Sand. Beyond that, I've recently sold The Days of Dust and Ash, a new sci-fi thriller series with a lot of dark, fantastic overtones. And then I have the last three books in the Shattered Sands series. Those aren't currently under contract, but I hope they will be sometime next year.

I'll be writing a few short stories along the way as well, and at some point, I'm going to gather up a small series of Shattered Sands shorts and sell them as a collection.

Plus, I'll be generating the various videos and writing tips along the way, and eventually rolling those thoughts up into how-to articles, longer videos, and/or seminars.

I'm setting only one goal of $2,000 for this Patreon. Why $2,000 specifically? The short answer is health insurance. That is the rough budget for health insurance (medical, dental, and vision) in Wisconsin for a family of four. This particular cost will skyrocket to become the single, largest expenditure I'll have for my family.

Because my health insurance was subsidized in the past, it wasn't nearly as much of an expense as it will be in the future. Not that it was cheap, but the swing from employer-provided insurance to private is pretty staggering. So if I can get that covered, I feel very confident I can keep the writing moving.

Should I be so fortunate as to reach this primary goal, I'll set up additional goals to get you more cool stuff.

For now, let's get started and see where we land. Thank you all in advance!

Same as above, but you'll also get a sneak peek at a chapter or short story per month. This will be fairly raw (unedited) work, but will give you some insight into what I'm working on. If you're a fan of the Shattered Sands series, you'll be able to follow along as I work on the books and other, related short stories.

That same as the $5.00 reward. Plus, you'll get an e-copy of any new short fiction as rights are returned to me (typically 6-12 months after publication). You'll also gain access to a monthly video I'll tape on writing. I'll share pieces of my writing in progress (generally as spoiler-free as I can make them), thoughts on writing using examples from my own stories or stories I'm reading from others. I may even have guests on from time to time.

You'll also get access to the longer videos I'll record quarterly on the craft of writing. These will become part of longer seminars on writing that I'll eventually deliver at conferences, conventions, and the like.

The same as the $15.00 reward, plus you'll get the first three chapters of any new novel I create. This will be post-copy edits, and several months before the book comes out. You'll also be invited to join me in a Google hangout, held twice a year, to talk about writing (mine or yours), the craft, and other general geekery.

The same as the $25.00 reward, plus I'll send you an author copy from each of my novels when I receive them. I get both UK and US versions of my books, so you'll get to choose which one you want to receive. I could even send you a foreign language version if you prefer (currently French, German, and Dutch), but be aware that the English versions will generally come out months before the translated versions. This reward is limited, as I only receive so many author copies.

The same as the $50.00 reward, plus I'll send you an Advanced Reading Copy of each of my books when they become available. This is limited as I only get a handful of ARCs for each book.
Goals
$134 of $2,000 per month
If I reach this goal, I can secure the ability to write full-time and free up 40+ hours of writing time per week to create more fiction and share more writing tips.
