Break Step Velocity.

Break Step Velocity is a comic project that's been in development for a little over eight years now. It's set in the distant future focusing on the character named Steve, a bit of a slacker with exceptional piloting skills who has the not-so-exciting job of hauling industrial freight. One day, Steve does a good deed that inadvertently makes him the most wanted man in the galaxy and sets him on an epic adventure of discovering other planets, new cultures, and ultimately, himself.

As a sculptor/doll artist by profession, I originally intended to bring my vision of the story to life using articulated sculpted figures and handmade sets. In 2008, I began to experiment with digital sculpting using ZBrush and 3D printing to create figures with interchangeable expressions based on characters from the Break Step Universe. This brought me much closer to my goal of telling my story with handmade characters and sets; but the amount of models I would have single handedly needed to create to tell the whole story was out of my reach.

I continued to digitally sculpt my characters (as collectors loved them), but the idea of a comic was shelved. A few years back, I began to share some of my scripts and designs with other artists. That's when a longtime friend and professional illustrator/comic artist, Denys Kovalenko, fell in love with the offbeat characters and their story. We began to discuss the possibility of bringing the story to life as an illustrated comic, as well as creating extra mini comics using my sculpted figures. We had heard a lot about the Patreon Campaigns from other artists, so we decided to give it a try!

What you're helping make possible.

First of all, you will be helping us meet our goal of finishing the first issue by October 2017 (with more issues to follow). This is a project we both would be working on, even without the Patreon; but the extra funds will make it go much faster and relieve a bit of stress on our parts. Denys and I are both full time artists who support ourselves entirely through our art sales (not an easy thing in today's world) and any contribution (large or small) will be a big help to us. It allows us to devote more of our time to making Break Step something truly special.

What we'll be offering in return.

You will have complete access to all of the behind-the-scenes processes that go into our work: Denys' design and comic sketches, exclusive photos of my latest sculpts, dolls in process, and videos of us working. The Patreon site will allow you to comment directly on all of our posts, as well as make suggestions and ask questions. Unlike sites such as Facebook, that use an algorithm to filter posts down so they are seen by only a third of our watchers, you will be notified of EVERY post we make (which will be in glorious high resolution and uncompressed quality). We both cringe when we work hard to create vivid and detailed images, only to upload them to Facebook and Tumblr and see the quality mangled.

We will also be offering our personal instruction through instructional PDFs, time lapse work videos and one-on-one personal mentorships to anyone interested in: drawing or comic illustration, digital modeling in ZBrush, 3D printing, mold making, or casting and doll making. Denys has taught classes in Europe and I have all over North America; we will both be offering our years of experience to help you learn how to do what we do.

  Becoming a Patreon.

You can pledge a little or a lot. Remember ANY amount helps. If only 100 of our combined watchers contribute just $2 a month, that will amount up to $200 a month we can both devote to silicone, paper, comic printing, etc. For those who have not used Patreon before, you will be charged once around the first of the month. If you join up later in the month, you may not be charged until the following month. Once your pledge clears, you will then be sent links to the premiums such as PDF tutorial files, as well as mailed any physical rewards (face plates, printed comics, etc.) when completed.
