About

Just like it says on the label:  Stuff. Things. Goth.

I'm Avril Korman and I'm a designer (actually, natively) from NYC.  You probably know that already, since you're here.  You're also probably mispronouncing my name*.  I mean, I'm used to it, and I totally blame my mother, but I figured you should know up front.

My educational background is in the following subjects:  Music, Design, and Historic Restoration and Preservation.  I have an almost silly number of degrees, and therefore I'm living proof that they don't really mean all that much.  Let that be a lesson to you, folks.

But I am a DJ, a qualified interior designer, a professional artist, a former musician, and someone who has learned that they can design, build, create or restore damned near anything. It's a minor superpower and not as nifty as teleportation or the ability to conjure instant grilled cheese sandwiches. But you know, you have to make do with what you've got.  Also, I like to knit when I can scrape the time together, because secretly Im a spider.

I own and/or partner in a bunch of brands and ventures.  (Beautiful Freak Cosmetics, Gothika, Fascination Street, House of Rain, Pale Empress, and Eggrotech.) Some of them I do myself, some I do with other people.  But the one thing they all have in common is that thing on the label - Stuff. Things. GOTH.  And it's that last bit that's the key to it all.  The plain truth is that everything I do falls under that last (lace and black) umbrella.  I don't get my goth on once a year. I do it all the time, which also means I don't exactly fit in well with most people.  That's okay. I'm used to that too.

To be honest, if I had my choice, I'd cheerfully make things and give them away.  Money is not the most important thing in my life.  Sadly though, I still have to pay rent and buy catfood and buy occasional plane tickets because some of the people I love most in the world live across an ocean. Even though the stuff I make is FSVO "popular", like every other freelance artist ever, it's not steady.  So Patreon is a great way to split the difference - Im happy to show and teach and give access to stuff in exchange for some stability I don't have to think about too much.

If you're still reading, thanks.  I'm a super introverted person and kind of a dork, but I am genuinely good at what I do, and if you're down to share that in whatever way you're comfortable, I'll do my best to make sure you get your money's worth.  Sometimes (okay a lot of the time) I'll be talking about skin care stuff (soap. So much soap.) , sometimes housewares (sheets, towels, kitchenware, pillows... that kind of thing) , sometimes it will be clothing, or actual artwork made out of eggs (Im serious.), or how to restore (whatever), or jewelry. I can even talk about architecture and art history Hell, I'll even talk about my cats if you want.

80% of design is concept and process.  10% is product and the missing 10% is all the sleep you lose on the rest of it.  But I'll be happy to show you the 80% and give you access to the other 10% (but Im keeping that last 10 for naps. I like naps.)

I genuinely appreciate any interest in the things I do so if you're sticking around, please know it's meaningful.

Also, I've been asked to show how to do a decent victory roll.  I can do that too.

*Unless you speak French, and then you're probably fine.

Once I hit this amount, i can offer other sorts of things to supporters as perks, like tote bags, and tshirts as a thank you for all your gothtastic support.  It will also allow me to develop other kinds of products (there's a long, long list of things people want.)
