Hello! I'm Bruce Owens Grimm, and thanks for checking out my Patreon page! I'm an essayist and memoirist who is looking at queerness, fatness, mental health, and supernatural folklore.

Cool. What does that mean?

This means that I write about things like a cult murder that happened near where I grew up, what it was like to come out of the closet at 33 after being married to a woman for nine yearswhat it means to be someone who is not only fat but desires to be fat and what the ghost story means to me

I'm at work on a memoir, currently titled Inventory of a Haunted House, which has received interest from publishers and agents. I received many positive rejections. They loved the subject matter and my writing, but they felt the overall manuscript wasn't quite ready.

I'm passionate and feel a responsibility to bring a discussion of queerness, fatness, and mental health to as large and diverse an audience as possible.

Awesome. Got anything else to share?

I'm the current President of the LGBTQ Caucus for AWP (Association of Writers and Writing Programs), I've organized many events such as the Chicago Writers Resist events (my interviews to promote the event are here), Stories and Queer, a traveling reading series that traveled around the country to give queer writers and audiences, especially in smaller towns, a place to be seen and heard. I'm editing an anthology called Fat & Queer, based on the Fat & Queer series I wrote for Queen Mob's Teahouse.

Wait. Why do some of your publications have a different name?

Good question. I recently, in the past few months, changed my name to Bruce Owens Grimm. While many of the magazines that published have been generous enough to go back and change my name, there are still some places where my birth name still exists.

Why did you change your name?

I changed it in order to give myself a little bit of distance from the trauma of my childhood. And to be honest, I never liked my birth name. I love my name now. It makes me feel like me.

Ok. Cool. Tell me more about your memoir.

Yay! Awesome!

My memoir is about coming out of two closets, once as a gay man, and then a second time as a gainer (someone who desires to be fat). The story is about being haunted by my past (being married to a woman for 9 years), the ghosts that follow me (being abused as a child), and the horror of living in the world with mental health issues, and overcoming my own shame to be comfortable with my fat body. I use elements of supernatural folklore to explore these threads of my life.

So, why are you asking for help?

I recently stepped down from my role as a manager for a major coffee retailer. The stress of the job and fulfilling all my writing tasks has become overwhelming. I've also been diagnosed with depression and anxiety that is only exasperated by the stress of essentially trying to manage two careers. I'm staying with my employer, but in a different role with less stress. The coffee shop position is my job. Writing is my career.

I feel like I've reached a now or never moment where I must focus more on my writing if I hope to achieve the goals I have set for it.

Community is very important to me. Without community, I wouldn't be where I am today. I'm asking for help from the community so that I can finish rewriting my memoir manuscript in a less stressed environment. I want to give and will continue to give support to my community how and when I can. My hope is that I can do that in larger ways once the memoir is published. I have difficulty asking for support, so I don't ask you to join me on this journey lightly. I'm taking a big leap of faith to prioritize my writing so that I can create more of the essays that have helped others feel seen and less alone.

Thanks for reading this far, and (if you choose to do so) thanks for supporting my work!
