About

Hello. Welcome! My name is Bruce Owens Grimm and I'm a nonfiction writer, editor, and workshop leader. I'm a co-editor for Fat & Queer: An Anthology of Queer & Trans Bodies & Lives. PEN America recently awarded me a Writer's Emergency Fund Grant for writers whose income has been impacted due to COVID-19. I'm also creating an Inventory of a Haunted House.

What does this mean? Inventory of a Haunted House is the name of my haunted memoir in progress about the ghosts my secrets create. It's about me coming out at thirty-three after being married to a woman for nine years. It’s about confronting the shadows of my childhood and how tenderness from a fellow fat queer man shows me it is possible to find comfort in a haunted house.

Ghost stories are no longer just for fiction. Everyone is haunted in one way or another, which means everyone has a ghost story to tell. As Carmen Maria Machado, says in her haunted memoir, In the Dream House, “The memoir is, at its core, an act of resurrection.”

The key to understanding haunted memoir, and how ghosts can be present in nonfiction, is that a body can be a haunted house. A ghost is simply energy left behind. It can be a person, a memory, a secret, anything that has left an imprint on a person or a place. Haunted memoir includes both literal ghosts and metaphoric ghosts.

I've taught my Haunted Memoir: What Ghosts Reveal About Life workshop at StoryStudio Chicago and at Arizona State University’s Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing’s Desert Nights, Rising Stars conference, which named me a 2020 Desert Nights, Rising Stars Fellow.

All of my work is haunted in one way or another. With your support, I can continue to produce work such as my Cultland series for Iron Horse Literary Magazine,  essays about the intersection of fatness and queernessreclaiming the word pansy, book reviews about queerness and mental health, and excerpts from Inventory of a Haunted House.

For more information on my publications, the haunted memoir workshop, and residencies I've attended, visit my website.

Please join me and my other wonderful patrons as we step into the haunted house.
