The world is a dark place and every sign of generosity and support matters. This inner circle is a friendly community of people who want to take a seat on my rickety flying rickshaw ride into the creative life.
You'll get access to my patron-only posts here, access to my behind-the-scenes Discord community where I share unfiltered thoughts and details about writing a book, leaving the tech world, trying to make a living off of a creative career, and remaining physically and mentally healthy enough to add something positive to the world. You'll also get access to my Substack newsletter, which has all the big announcement-y things, and some ongoing musings on disagreement and bias.
There are free versions of both the Discord community and the Substack newsletter, so if you're not quite ready to join the inner circle, you can test the waters here:

Between my job, writing a book, being a parent and husband, pursuing my own interests, and trying to get at least 5 hours of sleep a night, I unfortunately don't have a much time or energy left over to accept invites to coffee, beer, and other social things. BUT I do have a little bit, and I do like people.
This tier is for people who don't already have other avenues for reaching me and asking questions or discussing something you think would be meaningful.
With this tier, you'll get:
Everything in the $1 tier, obviously. AND I will respond to DMs and be open to conversations that I'd normally have to decline based on aforementioned time and energy constraints.
Topics available for discussion include:
- Anything about cognitive biases, systems thinking, belief systems, or arguing.
- The process of writing a book, working with agents and publishers, selling a book, etc.
- Product management, candid thoughts on working in tech, general advice and opinions
- Whatever else you think would be fun.
Every 3 months or so I'll also reach out and ask if you're interested in a real coffee/beer (if you are nearby) or a video chat as well.
👋 Hi!❤️❤️❤️First of all, thank you to each and every person who has hopped on my creative rickshaw, regardless of if it was for a month, a year, or longer. Here's my WALL OF GRATITUDE in tribute to you all. In the first year of having this page, I wrote 61 posts for patrons, and 80% of the people who joined are still active. The key, I've learned, is having a low bar... $1/month is all it takes to opt-in to this community. ❤️❤️❤️
What am I joining for $1/month?
I'm writing a book, and building a small friendly community of people who want to take a seat on my journey as I try to make a living from creative pursuits.
What is the book about?
My book is titled Why Are We Yelling?, and will be published by Portfolio (an imprint of Penguin/Random House) on November 19th, 2019. This is my home base for early access, behind-the-scenes, and random thoughts related to this project. I share pretty much everything about this process, and you'll get access to all the posts from the very beginning of the journey even if you join now.
What kind of community should we build?
I'm using this Patreon page to connect with people who are interested in the same weird topics that I'm interested in. That includes cognitive biases, having more fruitful disagreements, systems thinking, game theory, and related topics. I want to include you in the behind-the-scenes book writing and publishing process, and real life experiments that help validate or invalidate hypotheses I'm trying to make. I've hosted "disagreement potlucks" on the topics of gun control and ghosts, and also ran a couple prisoner's dilemma tournaments on Facebook. My experiments take me to weird places, and I want to bring you along! There will also be snippets of work that I would love feedback on (chapter skeletons, drawings, and sometimes larger sections), play-by-play updates with the writing progress roller coaster, and random thoughts that I have about trying to live a creative and meaningful life.
How did I end up here?
My obsession started with cognitive biases, and when I synthesized all 200+ known cognitive biases into my cognitive bias cheat sheet it revealed to me that I wasn't the only person interested in this stuff. I was approached by Portfolio Books (part of Penguin / Random House) and now I'm writing a book about how to apply knowledge of cognitive biases to something truly useful: disagreements.
Or, you can just follow this page and get the major updates as they happen. It's all just a big experiment so hop on or hop off or do you own thing and we'll see how it goes!
