👋 Hi! I'm Buster Benson and holy crap I'm writing a book and trying to leave the tech world for creative pursuits!

❤️❤️❤️First of all, thank you to each and every person who has hopped on my creative rickshaw, regardless of if it was for a month, a year, or longer. Here's my WALL OF GRATITUDE in tribute to you all. In the first year of having this page, I wrote 61 posts for patrons, and 80% of the people who joined are still active. The key, I've learned, is having a low bar... $1/month is all it takes to opt-in to this community. ❤️❤️❤️

What am I joining for $1/month?
I'm writing a book, and building a small friendly community of people who want to take a seat on my journey as I try to make a living from creative pursuits. Between October 2018 and March 2019 I'll be investing a lot more in sharing the gritty details of this transition, IN REAL TIME, with anyone that is interested. All it takes is a pledge of $1.01 or more and I'll add you to my secret tier mailing list. If you just want the highlights, those will be posted for all patrons on a weekly or monthly basis, once we get the hang of this.

What is the book about?
My book is tentatively titled Arguing is Hard, and is set to be published by Portfolio (an imprint of Penguin/Random House) late 2019 or early 2020. This is my home base for early access, behind-the-scenes, and random thoughts related to this project. I share pretty much everything about this process, and you'll get access to all the past posts even if you join late.

What kind of community should we build?
I'm using this Patreon page to connect with people who are interested in the same weird topics that I'm interested in. That includes cognitive biases, having more fruitful discussions, systems thinking, game theory, and related topics. I want to include you in the behind-the-scenes book writing and publishing process, and real life experiments that help validate or invalidate hypotheses I'm trying to make. I hosted a gun control and ghosts potlucks recently, and also ran a couple prisoner's dilemma tournaments on Facebook. My experiments take me to weird places, and I want to bring you along! There will also be snippets of work that I would love feedback on (chapter skeletons, drawings, and sometimes larger sections) and  random thoughts that I have about trying to live a creative and meaningful life.

How did I end up here?
My obsession started with cognitive biases, and when I synthesized all 200+ known cognitive biases into my cognitive bias cheat sheet it revealed to me that I wasn't the only person interested in this stuff. I was approached by Portfolio Books (part of Penguin Random House) and now I'm writing a book about how to apply knowledge of cognitive biases to something truly useful: heated conversations. My book is tentatively titled "Arguing is Hard" and you'll be hearing a whole lot more about the process and the product if you become my patron.

Or, you can just follow this page and get the major updates as they happen. It's all just a big experiment so hop on or hop off or do you own thing and we'll see how it goes!

INNER CIRCLE (WITH DOOR TO SECRET TIER)
$1 or more per month
⚡️Unlock the limited time secret tier!

If you pledge ANY amount over $1/month between Oct 2018 and Mar 2019 you will be added to a secret tier with lots of oversharing and information about transitioning away from the tech scene via a secret mailing list.

The world is a dark place and every sign of generosity and support matters. This inner circle is a friendly community of people who want to take a seat on my rickety flying rickshaw ride into the creative life.

You'll get:

• Access to my patron-only posts where I share unfiltered thoughts and details about writing a book, leaving the tech world, trying to make a living off of a creative career, living in the Bay Area, and remaining physically and mentally healthy enough to add something positive to the world.

• If you join this tier and stick with me until the end of writing this book I'll include your name in the acknowledgments of my book on fruitful disagreements, when it's published in 2019.

• An invite to my companion Wordpress site that will include links, cheat sheets, and other things that I add over time.

• An invite to patron-only channels in my Discord community (which you can join even without becoming a patron).

Includes Discord rewards
BRAIN TRUST
$50 or more per month
Between my job, writing a book, being a parent and husband, pursuing my own interests, my long commute, and trying to get at least 5 hours of sleep a night, I unfortunately don't have a much time or energy left over to accept invites to coffee, beer, and other social things. BUT I do have a little bit, and I do like people.

This tier is for people who don't already have other avenues for reaching me and asking questions or discussing something you think would be meaningful.

With this tier, you'll get:

Everything in the $1 tier, obviously. AND I will respond to DMs and be open to conversations that I'd normally have to decline based on aforementioned time and energy constraints.

Topics available for discussion include:

- Anything about cognitive biases, systems thinking, belief systems, or arguing.

- The process of writing a book, working with agents and publishers, selling a book, etc.

- Product management, candid thoughts on working in tech, general advice and opinions

- Whatever else you think would be fun.

Every 3 months or so I'll also reach out and ask if you're interested in a real coffee/beer (if you are nearby) or a video chat as well.

Includes Discord rewards
Goals
155 of 1000 patrons
When I reach 1000 patrons, I'll feel like Project Flying Rickshaw has achieved escape velocity from the gravity of regular jobs. This is creative freedom for me.
