About

The California Review is a California-focused news publication whose student writers from across the nation reflect our desire to create an open forum for discussion and debate on the issues and trends affecting our state, country, and the world today. Founded in 1982 as a student-run newspaper out of UC San Diego, today we strive to capture a diversity of thought and perspectives that introduces readers to a wider conversation and a deeper level of awareness. This attitude of positive learning and engagement is made possible by the classical liberalism promoted by the editorial board: unquestioning support for the Bill of Rights—especially the First Amendment—a preference for market-oriented solutions, pride in civic engagement, and an understanding that sometimes, rarely, government is the solution. Even though the paper's official editorials are the firm domain of classical liberalism, we invite skilled authors of all political philosophies to lend us their voices, especially in opinion, news, analysis, and culture columns that challenge readers' and editors' conventional understandings.

Our publication is unique in that we pay students for their articles to encourage and reward time dedicated to writing, and use in-depth targeting to promote students' pieces and ensure that our authors have an audience worthy of their talents. Based on their level of commitment, supporters have the option of selecting pieces in the editing pipeline to gain credit for personally financing them, and may even become permanent patrons for favorite columnists. Though the vast majority of our donations are used in the pursuit of content creation and promotion, we still require a baseline level of funding to maintain our website and pay the taxes and fees that are unfortunately part of doing business in California—those who wish to direct funds towards basic operations will recieve quarterly performance metrics and access to our management team.
Goals
$6 of $500 per month
When we reach $500 per month, we will be able to publish and advertise 2-3 articles per week while covering all of our annual static overhead costs and saving to drastically increase readership through advertising.
