Hi folks,

Thanks for making your way to the Carnival Cinema Patreon page!
We aim to support positive culture through connecting communities via our  Online Magazine - An Arts and Culture Magazine with a Circus Bent - our fortnightly newsletters, our world circus map and through our social networks.
Circus, Community, Connection, Culture, Circus

A Brief History of our founder (Hamish McCormick) and Carnival Cinema - Hamish was born and raised in beautiful Arakwal, Bundjalung country- Mullumbimby, NSW (down the road from Byron Bay). He discovered circus as a young teenager and by the time Hamish was 14 he had decided that it was what he wanted to do with life - He was training with the genre-pushing Rock n Roll Circus from Brisbane and going to the National Circus Festival (Hamish didn't miss one Tassie Festival from 1996 - 2013). In 1999 Hamish attended the first NICA (The National Institute of Circus Arts) Training Project and worked for such companies (as either a performer or trainer) as Circus Oz, The Flying Fruit Fly Circus, Strut n Fret Production House, Spaghetti Circus and The Happy Sideshow whilst performing around Australia and festivals around the world. At the age of 21 Hamish came off a tall unicycle and broke his arm. Badly. With his good arm intact, he picked up a video camera and started documenting the world he lived in and the incredible people within it: his tribe. That was 2002.

Harley Mcleish & Anne-Marie Godin, Mullum Circus Festival

Since then Hamish has been documenting the Australian circus community, as Carnival Cinema, it has turned into his lifelong project. In the place of funding from government film or arts bodies he learned his trade and paid the bills making promotional material for companies and performers. This, and his strong relationships within the circus and broader arts community allowed him to capture incredibly intimate interviews, jaw-dropping unguarded moments, touch-and-go 'behind-the-scenes' footage and beautifully candid still photographs.
Having 'grown up' in the circus world - Hamish gets unique access and perspective to tell its stories from the 'inside'. He gets access to absolutely all areas of the creative process, in rehearsal, on tour, on stage, backstage and into the personal and private lives of this tight-knit community.
15 years later, Carnival Cinema now has thousands of hours of footage (as well as thousands of photos) of the contemporary Circus, Sideshow and New Vaudeville subculture on hard drives. 90% of this incredible footage has never been seen.

So whats the online Magazine all about?

Ultimately the magazine is about strengthening positive culture through connecting communities, we do that by telling stories via words, images and videos.
It is a growing and developing beast but already features:
- Interviews and articles of performers, companies, makers and creators
- Galleries of still photographs taken by Hamish as well as other featured photographers who specialise in documenting circus & creative process from around the world.
- The Manifesto, gentle reminders and takeaways about mindfulness and Mental Health, wellness and work/life balance in the Performing arts via our resident counsellor and coach Kareena Hodgson.
- Curated 'Pick of the net' highlights from things happening around the world.
- Articles written by members of our community.

We also have our World Circus Map which has Big Schools, Youth + Social circus classes, companies, Agents & Production houses, set builders, lighting, sound & Rigging companies and Physical & Mental health practitioners – All specialising in Circus and Physical performance.

Hamish creates loads of content but also acts as the 'Editor in Chief', curating a bunch of articles, videos etc. from other amazing creatives around Australia and the world, exposing them and their art to an audience of like-minded and appreciative people.

Our aim is to garner and strengthen a sense of community - on a global level - of creatives who are passionate about their craft. As well as exposing the amazing artists of various disciplines that we know (and we’re discovering more every day). Connecting this culture to itself as well as to the widest possible audience. Creating a platform away from the 'noise' of social media that you can tap into on a regular basis which is entertaining, informative and creates sharing, discussion and promotes a sense of community and archives this time and subculture.
And it is open access and available to all!

Now, Why Patreon? And how can you support?

We have chosen the Patreon platform so that we can tap into the People Power instead of banging our heads against the brick-wall of government/arts funding or major philanthropic institutions in Australia (there also is not a category for Hybrid Online Circus Magazine Documentary Makers! They don't get us - we've been trying!).
Also, our community has entrusted us with their stories & process and we don't believe in having to compromise that trust by some government bureaucrat or commissioning editor telling how my subjects should be portrayed or framed.
It is powered by the community for the community.
It also means on the website we don't have to rely on random unwanted google ads bombarding people and it keeps it open access for all.
So think of this as our digital 'street performers' hat - you can see what we are creating (and what i have been creating for the last decade or so), if you enjoy it, feel like its adding value and want to support it you can - by becoming a Carnival Cinema Member (Check the tiers on the right) and supporting on a monthly basis - Membership ranges from as little as $1 a month to the equivalent of a nice hot meal (and beyond if you wish) and there is some sweet 'rewards' to get access to as well. Think of it like giving up 1 beer a month at that festival bar or a 1 cup of coffee and a biscuit once a month.

ATTENTION - The Pledges come out in US$!

If Membership hits that monthly target it would:
- Enable us to focus all our time on making the best online mag we can and keep adding to the resources ie the world circus map etc.
- Allow us to launch some of the other ideas we have ie Podcast and physical magazine.
- Allow us the time to start going through the thousands of hours of Hamish’s footage and create entertaining and informative stories, unlocking our recent history & memories, as well as just getting it out there to be seen!
- It would (ironically) enable us to create the space to finish longer form projects that Hamish has been working on for years - like the National Circus Festival Documentary which has been shot (the last bit of shooting thanks to People Power once again though crowd funding- many thanks to those who helped fund that).
- contribute to the cost of running our website etc

As the Membership grows beyond that it would also enable us to:
- repair and update our equipment
- chase stories and travel to document festivals, shows and performers to bring you tales and vision to your screen.
- pay our collaborators, contributors and employ other people to make this thing grow into what Hamish always dreamt it to be. For years (due to financial constraints) Hamish has been working alone and dreamt of the day where there is a team of amazing crew that I can collaborate with - and pay them for their talents!

Also through your 'Membership' you will be contributing to the archiving (in a watchable, entertaining form) of this subcultures recent history as well as capturing the stories that are happening now. Helping get all our stories out there as well as helping maintain and develop an important online resource for the performing community.

So again thanks for stopping by and for becoming a Carnival Cinema Member!

Much respect,
Peace,
Hamish McCormick
