Your generosity = new WBW possibilities

Hey Patrons,

Just want to let you know that our decision this week to hire three new people (http://waitbutwhy.com/2015/09/wait-but-why-is-hiring.html) is directly tied to us hitting the $10,000 mark on Patreon. These are hires we've badly needed, but hires we simply couldn't afford until now. Patreon pledges are literally changing what's possible for Wait But Why—which is so exciting. The full-time position in particular will be taking a huge load off my back, which translates directly into more time for me to think, write, and draw.

So 10,000 thank yous for putting your money behind the WBW mission—we're going to use it to give you a lot more of what you love about the site.

Ravenous! Studio demo

As I might've mentioned, I made some demos in May with the inimitable Pete Donnelly (who produced Buoy), the infamous Joe Plowman (bassist extraordinaire), and the irrepressible Fred Berman (drummer from Amos Lee etc). I've been doling them out once a month, secretly and with a sense of mischief, here on Patreon and nowheres else. This is the fourth (of six), and I'm aiming to release the final one next month, soon afterwhich I'll be dug deep into the making of the actual album.

This song, Ravenous, is an anthem for the libertines, adventurers, and thoughtful hedonists. Please enjoy it in its raw basementy rock and roll glory.

I'm posting from Homer, Alaska, where I'm visiting with far-flung family. I've seen orca whales, sea otters, bald eagles and puffins - not to mention the glaciers and the bay, which are turquoise and purple and vast and gorgeous. The beauty is mindboggling. I'll send y'all a postcard.

Hedonistically yours,

Carsie

Perfect Song #7: My Heart Hurts

You may ask yourself, 'Gee, when will Carsie get over the songwriting genius of Nick Lowe, and start listening to someone else?' The answer is: not yet.

The dude is a heavyweight, that rare lyricist with guts and an ear for melody, of Paul Simon or Carole King caliber, but weirdly unsung here in the states. I feel it is my civic duty to study and share his work with the utmost dedication.

Also, I only got turned on to Nick a couple years ago (thanks to Milton, who I may never be able to repay), and he has a huge catalog. It's taking me a while to catch up.

This song is from Nick's 1982 album 'Nick the Knife', which I recommend HIGHLY. Here are a few of the things that make it perfect, in my humble opinion:

1) Catchy and somehow fresh-sounding earworm of a chord progression, made of the most oft-used chords known to man (1, 4, and 5 (in this case, C, F and G)).

2) Heartbreaking lyrics paired with uptempo, poptastic melody; leaving the listener feeling giddy but full of a strange and incongruous sorrow.

3) Weird time signature that you wouldn't even notice if I hadn't just told you about it.

4) Lyrics that give you the one-two punch of being adorable and fun to hear, while tackling a confusing and emotionally complex topic.

The topic, in this case (according to me): what it's like to be a sensitive, marshmallow-hearted person who can't help but fall in love (and/or in lust) constantly, heartbreak be damned.

I have no idea what that's like, of course, but here's my take on it anyway.

Yours in heartbreak,

Carsie

Golden Circus Days is LIVE!

Oh friends, I'm so excited. A project that I've been dreaming about for over a year has finally started in earnest. There's something so satisfying about that, no? It's almost as satisfying as actually completing said project. Golden Circus Days is a new blog that will hold portraits, candids, stories, interviews, anecdotes, travel guides, and more. It's a visual archive of the Gold Unit of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, my "home" for the past three and a half years. I've been sitting on the idea for a while; I even had the URL purchased but wasn't doing anything with it quite yet. But then...it was just announced that the Gold Unit, after a decade of touring, will be closing, leaving dozens out of work, including my husband, a trumpet player in the circus band. Now is the time to launch, and so I am. "Project" perhaps isn't the best word for this venture, because that hints at an activity that has a start and an end. With your help, and the help of the [hopefully] many others who will be joining you, I'd like for Golden Circus Days to continue long after October 2015, when its namesake show will be shuttered. Please visit my new site and enjoy! I have already received some pretty tremendous verbal support and I look forward to growing what I hope to be a big and vibrant community. Thank you SO much for being here already. Emily

home and aghh and ANIMATORS...ideas, anyone??

hola guys finally home after three weeks away and finally clearing off my fucking desk and despairing about the emails from three months ago that i did not answer. i spent the last few days after tour in NYC staying with lance horne and meow meow in lance's apartment in new york city...cuddling with friends in bed and having a meeting with art spiegelman about a secret exciting thing that you will know about soon as can be. not a patreon thing, another thing, but a huge, great, exciting thing nonetheless. coming home from tour this time is so weird. everything's been weird, being pregnant. every time i do something i'm like: IS THIS IS? IS THIS THE LAST TIME I AM GOING TO DO THIS IN PEACE? IS MY LIFE OVER? AM I GOING TO BE MORPHED INTO A SHELL OF MY FORMER SELF? WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO MEEEEEEE??????? wait do i have mother issues.......? anyway. i'm dealing. everything in moderation. i'm actually practicing the most zen i've ever practiced. the minute i think about the future, i freak the fuck out. so i'm like: helllo, now. you're nice to be in. hi there. i'll be in you. the alternative is too fucking scary right now. hello pillow. hello keyboard. hello glass of juice. what's UP. look at us, just being here. what a miracle we are. future? what future? we HAVE NO FUTURE. we ARE A HUMAN AND A PILLOW AND A GLASS AND STUFF. BABY? what baby? i have a fetus. a fetus is not a baby. only a baby is a baby. the future does not exist. what were we talking about? NOTHING, THAT'S WHAT. go back to bed, amanda. god do a miss blogging. what happened to me? where have i been? wait...didn't i get married? I AM SO CONFUSED. anyway. who are YOU?? exactly. update on the dolls webcast ....HOLY SHIT is it beautiful and i'm just kinda stunned and sitting here going: what do we do next? we can do ANYTHING. we have MONEY! we can HIRE PEOPLE and NOT FRET AND SWEAT AND LOSE MONEY for like the FIRST TIME IN AGES?! i am beside myself. ok so. i have had this ONE idea...i got it at TED. i don't really want to spoil it because...that'll spoil it, but it requires getting a really good ANIMATOR - who can animate STORIES, not just music. think blank on blank (if you haven't seen it: WATCH THIS ONE...its janis joplin and it makes me HAPPY https://youtu.be/VdF4b1_LQnQ)/ i'm actually REALLY excited about the idea of collaborating with more animators... i've worked with two or three over the years... notably hoku uchiyama for "have you seen my sister evelyn" from "evelyn evelyn" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skUK-OlU4H0 - it's pretty COOL) and also with this great kid vince mascoli for "sandy fishnets" also from "evelyn evelyn" (also, for your refence, the HIGHEST vocals on any song ever....holy shit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmTf-l1sD_E) i'd love to actually be able to give the money/love/work to some female animators if you guys know any good ones....animation is outside my general wheelhouse so i'd love some input. i'll cross-post some of this over on facebook, too. SO MANY PLATFORMS. anyway...ANYONE HAVE IDEAS??? please post LINKS to work and not just names. it'll help.... notes: i don't really like super cutesy or super-cartoony things. the cuter it is, the more i usually hate it. on that note...i just remembered about julia pott, MAYBE WE CAN GET HER i remember seeing this attached clip "howard" and just being ..... gahhhhh. MAYBE WE CAN DO ALL THE THINGS AFTER ALL x a p.s. UK tour dates are on sale SUPER SOON!!! http://amandapalmer.net/shows/ p.p.s. it's 3:45 am and i'm really tired. i love you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4drkp-ZS474

Karina Cetin Molly Crabapple! You already know her anyway but just in case you forgot. Her work with Kim Boekbinder and Jim Batt on I Have Your Heart was beautiful. I am not sure if she can actually create the animations or if Jim did most of the animation work using her art. But he's brilliant too as you know, but he has a penis and I know you were trying to find a woman.

Subbable and Patreon are Joining Forces

A note from Jack Conte, CEO and cofounder @ Patreon I’m pumped! Today Patreon and Subbable are officially joining forces! For those of you who don’t know Subbable, it’s a subscription payments service, much like Patreon, that allows fans to make monthly payments to creators. And it was founded by Hank and John Green. That’s right. The Vlogbrothers! The guys who were vlogging before vlogging was a thing. The guys who founded DFTBA (The record label - Don’t Forget to Be Awesome). The guys who founded VidCon. The short version of the story is this: creators on Subbable were about to see a 30 to 40% decrease in their monthly income, due to a change within Amazon Payments (Subbable’s payments processor). Super bad news bears. Imagine your next paycheck comes in the mail (or direct deposit if you’re super saucy and modern), and it’s two thirds of what you were expecting. So what could be done? Here’s a recap of my text convo with Hank, when it all started: " me: Talked to Michael yesterday. Basically you guys are going to have to ask all of your users to re-pledge and go through another sign up process if you change to PayPal. Give that there will be attrition, if you did want to join forces, this would be the time. Totally happy to help you guys move to PayPal, of course, but just wanted to make sure you knew that there's a natural, unique window right now, if you decide to ditch Amazon. Hank: We are going to have a meeting about this very thing in about an hour :-) me: Ok me: Cooooool " Patreon proposed a solution, dreamed up by my cofounder extraordinaire, Sam Yam: If Subbable creators launched on Patreon, we would reduce the effect of "drop off" by matching the first 45 days of pledges, up to $100,000. This “matching program” would do three things: 1) Creators would get a solid paycheck, even if all their subscribers don’t immediately migrate to Patreon. 2) The matching program would incentivize creators to mobilize their audiences effectively and immediately, knowing that their first month of funds would be matched. 3) It would generate excitement about the transfer, incentivizing patrons to pledge even more, knowing that their payments would be effectively doubled. (Quick side note: We realize that creators who are NOT on Subbable would also love some help from Patreon. So we’re starting an Arts Grant program later this year that gives all creators a chance to qualify for some extra funding, but I’m not going to get into that quite yet….) I want to make one thing painfully clear about this deal: the Matching Program means an extra $100,000 is going to creators. Not to Hank and John Green. Patreon IS acquiring Subbable and money IS changing hands, but MOST of the money that Patreon is spending on this acquisition is going to the matching program. And that’s what Hank and John wanted. Do you see what I’m saying here? I want people to understand how awesomely principled Hank and John are being. It’s a testament to the path that they have walked for years. It would have been possible for them to “exit” more traditionally, with a giant chunk of happy cash waiting for them at the end of the rainbow. But they wanted that cash to be diverted to Subbable’s creators. AND I THINK THAT’S KICK ASS. I use the term “Creator First” a lot at Patreon. And I use it as an adjective. But it’s not. “Creator First” is action. It’s behavior. It’s tough decisions for the benefit of the people within the ecosystem. And it’s not just a bunch of lalala optimistic hippy talk. It’s a business model. It’s having the confidence in our business to always put our customers’ interests ahead of our own. (That’s you, creators!) It’s knowing that in the long run, the devoted people who comprise Patreon will build ultimate utility for creators, and we will have endless wells of endurance to fuel our mission. Small, day-to-day sacrifices must be allowed to fade into the background. Patreon is Creator First, and damnit, so are Hank and John. They exemplify Creator First, not only in philosophy, but in action. Hank and John, I am so excited to be working with you dudes. And we are honored to have Subbable’s awesome creators on Patreon. I think this is the start of a long relationship and the continuation of an increasingly swift return to classical patronage. DFTBA, Jack

Patreon Raises $15 million

In editing the above video, I realized that I left a few things out: -The investors in our new round have an incredible track record of investing in impactful, community focused companies like Etsy, SoundCloud, Twitch, and Kickstarter. We talked with dozens of investors, and most of them were not the right partners for Patreon: they asked us to increase our 5% cut to 15%, for example. We chose partners, however, whose goals aligned with ours, and who trust us to serve the forming communities on Patreon. -Our investors trust us so much, in fact, that Sam and I, as founders, have double voting rights on the board. At this stage in the company, because the board is comprised of only the two cofounders (Sam and me) and our lead investor (Danny Rimer at Index), instituting double voting rights is more of a symbolic gesture than a practical utility. However, it sets an important precedent for the future of Patreon’s governance. -A few exciting stats about Patreon, our creators, and our patrons: -We’ve sent over $2 million to creators since our launch 13 months ago. -It took 11 months to reach the first $1 million paid to our creators by patrons. The second million was reached in 2 months. -Patronage to creators (in dollars) grew 10x in a 5 month period. -There are now actually 26,000 creators using Patreon (not 25k as I mentioned in the video!) -The full list of investors in Patreon’s Series A: Index Ventures, Charles River Ventures, Freestyle Capital, Thrive Capital, Atlas Ventures, SV Angel, UTA, CAA, Alexis Ohanian (cofounder of Reddit), Garry Tan, Aaron Harris, Sam Altman (President of Y Combinator), Joshua Schachter (founder of Delicious), David Marcus (former President of Paypal), Stan Chudnovsky (VP at Paypal), Joshua Reeves (founder of Zenpayroll), and Jenny Haeg (founder of Custom Spaces)
