About Casey Lucas

Hi there!

I’m Casey, and depending on where you clicked on this link, you may know me from any number of things. I’ve covered hockey at the NHL and IIHF level as a reporter and broadcaster. I tweet badly. I also write the web serial Into the Mire.

Into the Mire is a serialised dark fantasy novel that’s been updated weekly since April 2018. Writing fiction has always been one of my first loves, but the problem with writing other stuff for a living is that it’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling like you always need to be working on client projects. I started Into the Mire as an exercise in purposefully setting aside “me” time to write something I wanted to write. Committing to only a few thousand words a week meant I didn’t have to worry that I was neglecting paying jobs to write it.

Because it’s something I do for fun, I haven’t put that much time or effort into monetising it. More than one person over the last year has suggested I set up a Patreon, and I was always really sluggish about it, but I’m finally getting off my ass.

I’ve found I quite enjoy writing a serial, and if you’d like to support me in writing it, that’s very kind of you.

Some of my goals for this Patreon include:

  • Being able to increase the frequency with which I update Into the Mire. How does the Patreon help this? Simply put, if I don’t have to worry quite so much about taking on freelance writing and editing work to keep the bills paid, I can devote a lot more time to passion projects and just writing the stuff I love. I’m incredibly lucky to be a full-time writer and editor, but I often have to prioritise client work over writing for myself because hey, gal’s gotta eat.
  • Recording an audio version. Not a full on audio drama with voice actors, sadly. But I’d like to be able to record audio episodes with a commissioned soundtrack, and this takes both time and money.
  • Commissioning more cool art. Always more cool art.

I know that money is tight for just about everyone these days, so know that you have my heartfelt thanks whether you choose to lend financial support or not–even if all you can spare is a well-wish, I’m glad you’re out there reading my stuff and I appreciate the support. :)

$27.23 of $100 per month
When I hit $100 per month, I’ll be able to set some time aside for the audio adaptation. I’m a professional podcaster and sportscaster on other projects, so I have both the knowledge and professional-quality audio equipment to record a high quality podcast. All I need is a bit of financial breathing room, as all that narrating and editing takes time.
