I've been working on a new set of illustrations for Hugh Howey's new book: Beacon 23.  If you've not read them (It's a set of 5 short stories), they're worth checking out.   And thanks for the support, Cassidy.

Ben J Adams It's a pretty great read. I'm considering making the prints a Patreon only reward, or at least offering them here first.

New Milestone: Technology

You're right, you're right. I know you're right.

I gotta bite the bullet on this. I'm romanticizing my Milestones right out of having any. Perfectionism at its finest. I wanted goals that were artsy and poetic. I wanted them to appropriately represent my overall artistic vision. I wanted the goals themselves to tell a story. A good, compelling story…

Oh shut up, already.

This is where Colin's mind starts to flip inside out because I'm forgetting the whole purpose of what milestones accomplish. This is why Patreon exists! It's gonna get a lot harder to be artsy and poetic when I have nothing left to document my work with. Fair point. I get that. As milestones go, this seems pretty straightforward.

But it's not exciting! It's not pretty to look at! It doesn't have a story! ::screams into an empty room::

Which is exactly what everyone will be saying about my art career if I don't get the technology issue solved.

So! Here we go. Click here to see my homepage and milestone goals.

$1500 (per month) is a generalized number that will kickstart my entire update. I need a computer. I need a camera. Mics. Lights. Stuff that will propel me further into the Artistic stratosphere. Or at the very least, the internet. These upgrades will happen as needed, depending on which things break first. Hopefully before then. Hahaha? ha? ... ::saves file again::

I hate talking about the mundane details of all this. It's boring. It's drab. It's bills. Who cares about my technology requirements anyway? Isn't that my problem?

It brings up a lot of feelings that I'm a burden on people.

But it's also the foundation of absolutely everything I do and the second most important tool I have (after painting.) The REASON all of this is happening (even the very conversation I'm having with you now) is because of technology. Maybe a computer itself isn't romantic, but it's my window to the world. It gives me a place to be me. It gives me a community I've always lacked. It brings opportunity I never would have imagined. It allows me the freedom to be an artist.

All that sounds pretty freakin' romantic to me. :)

You guys are the berries! I love you! Thanks for pushing me into this.

Jill Griffin - Fine Artist I'm right there with you Shayla...my laptop is soooo not fit for purpose, so much so that I don't use it! I do pretty much everything on iPad, which brings with it limitations,,..small screen, clunky editing tools, limited storage....bla bla bla. So I updated my goals too...now my team have given me permission to update my laptop...hurrah!

Shayla Maddox Sometimes it's so hard to keep up with technology! I feel like I got all this stuff recently but just a few years to a computer is like three human lifetimes. Oy. My phone actually has more available space than my laptop! hahaha

Milestone: London

Bam. Pow. Whammo. Didn't see that one coming, eh?

At least not again today. But, I kinda want the fanfare! This is a big deal. I'm declaring this Milestone Day. I'm making up for lost time by setting two new mind-blowing milestones.

:: $2000 :: Double fresh, double smooth.

I had wanted to make a video of this announcement, but that didn't work out*. (*See 1st new Milestone.)

Instead of reshooting, reediting-- redoing-- the entire thing, I've decided to just let it go. Float away into the sky, subpar video idea. Be free.

I don't want to waste time with it. I'd rather make a completely different video. I'd rather finish my commission work. I can think of a bazillion things I'd rather do that would facilitate my life and longterm goals much better than getting stuck on that damn video.

So, fuck it. Let's rock and roll.

I have an opportunity to have a show in London. I'm going to take it. It's going to be unlike any show I've ever had before. It's going to be unlike any show I've ever heard about before. There's much research and planning to do. Isn't it wonderful how ideas spark other ideas? I can't write them down fast enough.

And now that we have Patreon, we can start thinking big. Really big.

We can revolutionize what it means to have an "art show."

This project is a longterm work-in-progress, to be developed over the course of however long it takes us to achieve this milestone. Maybe it'll take a while! Or maybe it won't. ;) I'm ready either way. I'm working with a terrific group who's going to help me turn this wacky idea into a real, actual event on the streets of London.

I will reveal more as time goes on, but know this! This is game changing-- for me yes and I hope for others around the globe. It's a huge statement. It's totally out-of-the-box. I'm very excited. ❤

Take that, traditional art world. ;)

Coby Waan Very cool! If I may, what makes this show unlike any you have ever heard of before? Or is that a secret? Edit: Whoops, just reread the "you will tell us more as time goes on" part.

August 5, 2015 15:04:12 · Reply

Shayla Maddox Hehe. ;) Well it's still in the initial stages of planning, so not much to tell just yet. We want match the pace of the milestone, and be ready for anything. But I'm enjoying the brainstorming phase way too much. My ideas are spreading out toward the moon!

That's me! I'm on the homepage! I am the homepage!

❤️

Thanks, team. :) All y'all.

(Thanks for the photo Colin!)

I'm passionate about Patreon and this is a huge badge of honor for me.

I love representing art. I want others to know how much opportunity there is to BE an artist. It gives me hope.

There's no way I could have possibly fathomed all of this when I was a kid. Smartphones? The Internet? Sustainable art career? Science Fiction. Except that it's not and now I'm an adult and here we are and I feel like we're so close and woo is it getting warm in here? Because I feel like we could really take this thing somewhere. Do you know what I mean? Anywhere. Where do you feel like going. Los Angeles? San Francisco?

London?

Oh and I'm posting this from the fancy new (still-in-beta) Patreon app so everything feels very interconnected and superfuture. Superfuturisticky.

There's still time before I have to break out my Cockney rhyming slang. Of which I have none.

Although I am just about to head up the apples.
