Cat Burton is creating a photography mentoring community

Hi there!

Having switched to photography full time in 2017, I have a lot of people asking me for help and advice with their photography - whether it's as a hobby, or turning pro.

I wanted to create a safe space for people to learn, share and grow their skills, with my guidance and support.

This group is open to all kinds of photography, including virtual photography.

Who am I?
I am a creative fine art photographer based in beautiful Scotland. My favourite subjects are animals, landscapes (especially lone trees) and ruins. My work is inspired by fantasy, folklore, nature and video games.

Some of my work is composite photography, and some of it comes from one single image. I don't believe in placing rules and constraints on peoples' creativity. Make what you love, using whatever tools and techniques feel right to you!

What Can I Help You With?
Due to my technical background (I used to be a software engineer in the video games industry) and artistic skills, I have a broad spectrum of topics I can help you with. From getting the best out of your camera, to composition techniques, to editing in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Subject-wise, I have a lot of experience with nature photography, primarily landscapes and animals. I have also photographed architecture, people and events.

If you're not sure whether I can help you, perhaps check out my website, and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Why Patreon?
Since Patreon is a well known service, it makes sense to use their platform. Not only that, but it saves me a bunch of admin, which means I can spend more time helping you!

Why Is It Priced In Dollars?
That's because Patreon was established in the US. The mentoring is priced in USD and as such may vary from month-to-month slightly (eg a couple of pounds for my UK friends) for those who don't use USD as their primary currency. If you have any concerns or questions about this, please feel free to contact me.

How Does It Work?

1) COMMUNITY ($5)
I am hoping to build a community of people who love photography. Whether you're a virtual photographer, real world photographer, hobbyist, pro or simply like taking photos on your phone: you are welcome here. You can post your photos, ask the community for feedback, share interesting photography links and more. I'll also drop in from time to time and offer feedback where you've asked for it.

2) MONTHLY CHALLENGES ($10)
We'll have monthly challenges - just for fun! These can be a great way to try different techniques or experience something new. For example, a theme might be "Water" or "Dogs" or maybe something more abstract such as "Blue". Challenges will be optional and you can enter as many images as you like. At the end of each month, I'll pick a winner. There will be a small prize each month from my shop, such as greeting cards or notebooks, exhibition booklets, 1hr online mentoring sessions or even signed A4 prints! As the number of patrons grow in this tier, the better the prize will be!

3) PERSONAL PROJECTS ($25)
These are like the monthly challenges but personalised for you. At the start of each month I'll ask everyone at this tier to post their personal project ideas for the month, and then once you're happy with it, you can begin! It's up to you to decide when the project is complete and you're happy with it. There is no competition here - this one's all about personal growth in whatever area of photography you wish to focus on. P.S You can still take part in the community-wide monthly challenges as well if you wish.

4) SUPER PROJECT MENTORING ($50)
Limited to 30 People
This is an upgrade to the Personal Projects tier. It works mostly the same but once a month we can have a 30 minute hangout on Skype to discuss your Personal Project. This can be at any point in the process - whether you want some help part-way through, some technique demonstrations or simply to discuss your ideas. If you're not a fan of chatting via Skype, this can be done over email instead. At any point, you can post updates to your project or ask me for help with it here on Patreon. I'll aim to reply as soon as I can. P.S You can still take part in the community-wide monthly challenges as well if you wish.

Payments and Cancelling
Patreon payments are processed monthly. New patrons will be charged the day they become a patron, then on the 1st of the month going forward.

If it's nearing the end of the month and you're considering joining, you're welcome to wait a few days and subscribe at the start of the month. Please keep a note on the number of current members in certain tiers so you're not disappointed if someone takes the last space.

If you wish to cancel, you can do so at any time. Please see the Patreon help pages for full details on how to do so.

Building a Community
My best learning experiences have come from being part of a group - I've made strong friendships all over the world through online mentoring groups. I think they're hugely valuable and I hope to share this value with you through our Community section here on Patreon.

Feel free to post questions/photos/links in the community section. You can ask the group for feedback, discuss photography news - anything relevant to your journey and photography as a whole. I'll also share links to useful resources there and join in the discussions.

Community Rules
I'm intending to create a friendly group of photographers and virtual photographers, where everyone feels safe and welcome. So a few small ground rules will help keep things ticking over nicely:
1) We are LGBTQ+ friendly. Whoever you are, whatever your background, whatever your story, you are welcome here.
2) Be polite, courteous and friendly
2) No bullying/racism/abuse of any sorts will be tolerated
3) Keep the language clean please! Not for my sake, but in case we end up with younger members. I want people of all ages to feel welcome here. No swearing or adult material. Let's keep it family friendly.
4) Constructive criticism can be a tricky subject - some people want it, others don't. So we'll stick to the rule of: if people ask for feedback/critiques, then please do provide it (as kindly and supportive as possible). If people do not ask for feedback, check with them first before sharing any. They might be "done" with an image and not want any feedback, and that's fine.
5) Have fun!

If you have any questions, please do feel free to contact me in advance. There's a contact page over on my website at: https://www.catburton.co.uk/contact/
