What and Why
I am a felt maker, artist, bookbinder and writer.  Those are a lot of hats to wear while I walk around the studio but they all fit comfortably on my head.
Wool and my 40+ years of turning wool into a flat felted textile has been the center of my life.  But it is the ability of wool to absorb color creating vibrant, alive and multi-dimensional felt that made me into an artist.  I use resist dyeing techniques - repeated folding and clamping of the flat felt and dips into multiple dye baths - to create that amazing surface of the finished textile.

And books - from a six year old me devouring the library's science fiction section through working in libraries, bookstores and even a few years collecting and selling books, I harbor a lifetime of reading and a not so secret desire to write about talking squirrels.

It didn't take long to realize the potential of using resist dyed felt for the covers of my handmade journals and sketchbooks.  The more books I made, the more I experimented with various binding techniques and even other textiles as book covers.

Forty years of teaching the felting, resist dyeing and bookbinding techniques I developed gave me eye-opening adventures in travel and life lessons in teaching techniques, organizational skills, book writing and airport survival. Forty years I traveled around the world and although it seemed like a dream job for a while, it was hard at times hauling very large suitcases around, suffering decision fatigue when packing supplies and learning how to drop ship dye pots in distant lands.

My teaching life did not provide much of the time needed to simply sit and daydream in the studio, time that provides the rich creative life that in turn starts the excitement of hands on working.  I missed and needed that studio life.

And so I have made the hard decision to not travel and teach any longer.  I have finished my Farewell to Teaching Tour and am beginning the journey back to being a studio artist, digging up notebooks filled with ideas and plans and making good art.

Patreon, relationships and support
Patreon is an on-line membership platform where patrons - you, friends, former students, interested folks - who have loved, enjoyed, purchased and/or are curious about my work can support me and my work in the studio by pledging a monthly amount of both financial and emotional support - that will enable me to continue to make good art.  Teaching, although exciting and fulfilling did pay the bills.  Your support makes it easier to stay focused in the studio without spending days, weeks and months devoted to away teaching.

Things for you
This is the best part of Patreon.  In return for your monthly support, we will continue to stay in touch with weekly (Patreon only) blog posts that will share the tales of this studio life, book projects and working with new tools and dyes. There are four levels of Patron support to choose from depending on which works for you.  Each level offers different "things" to thank you ranging from studio videos where I will show what's going on as well as answer questions you have, discount codes for my ESTY shop re-opening soon, special monthly instructional videos on different aspects of dyeing and tools, studio visits with coffee, and actual felts or journals arriving in the mail.

I want you to know how much your support means to me knowing you are interested in what I am doing and where I'm going.  Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Oh, I am speechless at your decision to chose this tier!  What an amazing amount to pledge to me!  I would like to promise that I would come over and clean your kitchen but the focus of this Patron is for me to stay in the studio and work!  But in addition to all the benefits posted above for all the other Tiers, you are invited to come on over for studio visits and fresh coffee (or tea) and conversation when you are in town.  (Email me first to set up a  time).  And I will also be sending you in the mail special small pocket journals  when I'm designing new ones!  I thank you and my cat, Leon (bless his heart) thanks you one hundred and 5 million times!
