Hello! My name is Charis; I'm a Malaysian illustrator working in ink, watercolour, and digital media. Like many sci-fi and fantasy lovers, I've been reading novels, playing games, and looking at imaginative realism art for years...yet have very rarely seen Southeast Asian worlds or characters. I seek to tell stories rooted in this incredibly diverse region I call home: accounts of people and perspectives unrepresented in mainstream speculative fiction, narratives which critically consider communities around me.

Join me in developing these two projects:

KEJORA:
Sketches and microfiction inspired by Southeast Asian cultures and realities.

These are offbeat and dark, earnest and raw, covering themes like identity, community, conflict, tradition, and more. Kejora stands for the star that rises in the east. I'll be writing and drawing Kejora throughout 2019 at two separate artist residencies, plus working on it during my free time. More at http://charisloke.com/kejora

THE GEEKY BAJU PROJECT:
Southeast Asian garment designs based on literature, games, and film.

This series explores the intersection of popular culture with traditional garments as a means of storytelling. Each baju design is a representation of a character or idea from the source material - a love letter to the stories which have inspired me over the years, like The Lord of the Rings and The Last Unicorn, to more recent tales like The Fifth Season and Mad Max: Fury Road.

I recently created more additions to the series for a group show coming February 2019. With Patreon, you'll get to see the source materials, sketches, and inspiration for each design, delving into cultural traditions of clothing. More at http://charisloke.com/geekybaju.

WHY PATREON?

Here, we share a journey of art-making and learning. You can expect to read and respond to the process and ideas behind the art and stories, links and resources to SEA culture, thoughts on being a freelance artist, and the (very) occasional cat photo update.

Patreon enables patrons to actively support artists in the creation of their work by making monthly pledges. With your support, I'll be able to carve out more time and space to explore these projects. That could mean taking less freelance work, buying books for research on cultures, or taking an online course to develop my skills as an artist.

Because patrons receive updates directly from creators, you'll get to see all the content unlike on platforms like Facebook or Instagram where algorithms often determine which posts are visible. Your input is important in shaping future work as well as the reward tiers - I'd love to hear your feedback and comments!

HOW IT WORKS

Upon pledging, you will be charged upfront using the payment method of your choice (credit card, PayPal). Your pledge will then automatically renew on the first of each following month, Pacific Standard Time - that's 16 hours behind Malaysian time. You can change or cancel your pledge at any time and set a monthly maximum to stay within your budget. All Patreon payments are charged in USD.
