patrons

I am a writer who has been trying to finish the first draft of a novel that takes place in Hogan's Alley, Vancouver during the 1930's-60's. cheleneknight.com

How will becoming a patron help me? Living in Vancouver is expensive. Living in Vancouver as a single parent is even more expensive. Although I was able to write two books prior to this novel, I was able to do it because I wasn't afraid to ask for help and I had so much desire to get my story out there into the world. I exhausted myself working seven days a week at various jobs. I am at a point where I have to think of self-care, too. If I want this book written, and written authentically, I need the time and space to do it. I always tell people that writing is a privilege. So If I can work one less job, it will be a game-changer for me and Junie. Once this book is out in the world I will personally gift every patron a copy. I cannot wait for this day.

Set in the Strathcona neighbourhood of Vancouver, what was then known as Hogan’s Alley, Vancouver’s vibrant black community Junie is a story of a friendship that starts between two girls in the early 1930s. We jump from past to present following Junie as a young woman in 1941 and later as a young mother as she questions and hides her sexual identity, her best friend’s accidental discovery of her own mixed-ethnicity, and ultimately, where she really belongs—where they really belong.
Junie takes on the unpredictable verbal abuse of her alcoholic mother, Maddie, all the while denying herself love and any kind of happiness.During a time of uncertainty, where a there are rumours and talk about the community being pushed out due to whispers of urban renewal, Junie considers leaving behind all she’s ever known. With the discovery of one letter, all of these things float to the surface during a time where nothing was out in the open. Sometimes what should rip a family apart can just as easily hold them together.
