About

Hi there! My name is Jake. Welcome to Chief Live Gaming's Patreon Page!

Miniature painting is a rewarding journey often fueled by the passion and love for this creative outlet. This process is not always enjoyable. Even the most seasoned veteran painters battle feelings of frustration, anger, and lack of motivation. We can often find ourselves "stuck in a rut" and wondering why we aren't improving, or aren't improving fast enough for our liking.

Learning how to improve and grow as a painter can often be a daunting task. It is my goal to share my knowledge with you in an effort to help you during your painting journey. Oftentimes, a little help or push in the right direction can make the world of a difference.

When painting for clients, I am often challenged with painting large amounts of miniatures to a good result without spending too much time on each model. When painting 100 marines, each one doesn't need to be a centerpiece. They do, however, need to look good on the table as part of your force.

Over the last few years I have refined my approach to painting many different colors and techniques to achieve this goal. This same approach translates well to hobbyists looking to tackle their own collections. Most want to learn to paint their own collections, get them to look nice, and do it in a few hours a week. This experience is what I want to pass on in my tutorials.

Why choose my tutorials?

There are a lot of extremely talented artists out there producing miniature painting tutorials. My approach focuses on producing efficient painting techniques for all skill levels to utilize. I will often try to achieve a solid result in as few steps as possible. From there, I try to keep in mind ways to expand on the technique by adjusting or adding in more steps later. This allows you to build important painting fundamentals while leaving yourself headroom for future improvements!

I strive to maintain a high production quality throughout my tutorials. My written tutorials are designed with different devices in mind and will be easy to read on a phone, tablet, or PC. No matter your method of viewing, I want to make sure you can follow along!

In all of my tutorials, I try to avoid mixing paint whenever possible. I will strive to only use paints right out of the bottle thinned with some water. While this does limit us, I feel it also makes it much easier to recreate the steps of my tutorials. I often see people focusing too much on getting the perfect mix ratios when trying to follow a tutorial, or wondering if their mix was the problem if something doesn't turn out right. By eliminating the variable of paint mixing, I feel my tutorials are easier to follow along to and more accessible for all skill levels.

I provide the choice of both written tutorials and video tutorials. Each painter learns differently. I find that many people prefer seeing the brushwork on camera, but others may just want to know what colors were used in what order with some pictures. My PDF tutorials are designed to be easy to reference on a phone or tablet as well as PC so you can follow along easily!

More about Jake:

I am a full time commission miniature painter. I paint out of a basement studio in my house in Wisconsin, USA. I starting painting "professionally" in late 2015 while recovering from a motorcycle accident. In total, I have painted miniatures on and off for about 15 years. Most of my commissions and painting experience lie in the Warhammer 40k and Age of Sigmar (Warhammer Fantasy!) gaming systems. I also thoroughly enjoy painting other miniatures mostly in the 28-30mm scale from systems such and Dungeons and Dragons, Kingdom Death Monster, Gloomhaven, and countless other tabletop RPGs!

Like countless other hobbyists, I started painting soon after playing my first tabletop wargame: Warhammer Fantasy (Tomb Kings!). I enjoy playing many roleplaying games, board games, tabletop games, and video games.

Thank you for stopping by and taking a look into my passion, have a great day!
