2016 April Update: We have officially discontinued our Patreon campaign and patrons should no longer see charges on their accounts. Unfortunately, we are unable to continue producing translations or content on a regular schedule. We thank everyone who supported cS over this time and regret this disappointment. The following text remains for the record.

Dear chinaSMACK readers:

We need your support to keep our site online, independent, and uncensored.

If just 1% of the people who regularly visit our website each month gave just $1 a month, we can continue providing daily translations of trending Chinese internet content and netizen commentary to our large global audience.

Although we are one of the most popular blogs about China regularly sourced and cited by other media organizations including The New York Times, BBC, and even The Colbert Report, we do not have corporate support, investment capital, and we are not funded by any government grants or university department.

We are instead a small band of geeks, both Chinese and non-Chinese, contributing our free time, energy, and personal money because we believe there is significance in how China’s internet culture is shaping its modern society.

As our readership grew, we relied on advertising to pay our expenses and expand our content, but now we are forced to choose between advertising money and honest coverage of what ordinary mainstream Chinese netizens are seeing and saying.

If chinaSMACK is useful to you, if you appreciate our translations and our hard work, then please take a minute to help us make it ad-free so we can go back to focusing on what is capturing the attention of the world’s largest population of internet users.

Thank you!

P.S. - For fun, we've used popular Chinese internet slang as titles for our funding milestones and individual pledge rewards. Hopefully your computer can see them, and you can always check our glossary to see what they mean if you don't already know.

For our funding milestones, we've used phrases Chinese netizens often exclaim to express interest, support, or admiration. Let's get as far as we can!

For every level of individual patronage, we've used a humorous slang term Chinese netizens have coined for certain types of people (and often self-deprecatingly for themselves!) These are all tongue-in-cheek, in the spirit of Chinese internet culture, and not meant to offend!

To show the world who is responsible for keeping chinaSMACK alive and independent, we're going to put the names of all our patrons on a public "Patron Wall" on chinaSMACK. Names will be displayed in the order they became a patron, so earlier patrons will appear first before later patrons. You also of course have the option of remaining anonymous, using a business name, or using an acceptable pseudonym/nickname, but we want to make sure we give credit where it is due.

So, please pledge any amount you're able to, based on how much you value our work, and we sincerely appreciate you checking out our campaign.

网友! Thanks! We’ll put your name up on our Patron Wall, then bold and highlight it! Okay, we know, this isn't much, but we hope you're pledging based on your support of our work and not for the actual rewards themselves. Great translations of what's trending on the Chinese internet without advertisers censoring us is the real reward we're aiming for, right? :)

高福帅/白富美! Wow! Instead of plain text, we’ll put an image of you on our Patron Wall so you can show everyone how handsome or beautiful you are! You can also choose to display your logo, and if you want to keep how handsome or beautiful you are to yourself, you can instead display an image of something you love! You'll also get access to Q&A/AMA sessions we'll hold exclusively with our patrons, with the frequency of the sessions increasing with the number of patrons at this level and above.

精英! You stand apart! In addition to the above, our staff will record a personalized video thanking you for your support. Not only that, we’ll also mail you free swag and other tokens of our appreciation every year, and that begins with a cool chinaSMACK t-shirt! 牛逼! You are the boss! In addition to the above, your name/image and an acceptable link (nofollow) will appear as the exclusive patron sponsor of one of our translation articles every month!

$154 of $250 per creation
chinaSMACK currently displays ads in 7 locations throughout the website. Upon reaching this milestone, we'll take one of them down, because we are serious about eliminating our dependency on advertisers and being supported by those who genuinely believe in our work.
