PongSat Parts I'm still in the negative feedback stage of my KickStarter planning (more people should use that KS feature) , but I hope to release it on the next full moon June 2, 2015 and have it run for one month cycle (29.3 days). www.kickstarter.com/projects/kb3tyv/267390287?token=d174c29f

Trent Waddington I'm kinda saddened that your discussion on the possibility of NASA crowd funding didn't consider the effect on groups that have actually had successful crowd funding campaigns. Can you imagine Planetary Resources, for example, being as successful as they were if the average pledge could have gone to a NASA program instead?

Felix S. Well I would be more than happy to give NASA money living outside of the US. On the crowdfunding money levels: Star Citizen should reach 100 million dollar in the next six month, if not even more (currently 84 million https://robertsspaceindustries.com/funding-goals ) so nothing is impossible ;)

Illyrien @Mike, no, your point is not proven by a single rocket exploding. You should really take a look at the shows launch profiles. They typically list amount of launches and number of successes for the different types of rockets. Its not a 100% successes, but its pretty high. Likely, it will get better, as humanity learns to handle that kind of thing. Also, do note that historically, exploration has hardly been safe. Columbus lost 33% of his ships, on his first voyage (1/3).

Mike I get your point. However, the question here is "can comercial enterprise expand the frontier?". I say no. We are still using Columbus's wooden ships to explore Universe. It cost 30 million dollars to build the rocket which you will discard. You will burn $1-2 million dollars in fuel on start, at least. How practical all this?

Illyrien To an extent, yes we using "wooden ships" to explore space. That is, right now. Looking ahead, will we continue to do so? Well, if SpaceX and all the others are successfully in their reuseable technology, then the price will fall a fair bit. Also, there are companies, like Planetary Resources, which are wokring on mining space, especially, in order to build a "gas station" in higher orbit. With these two angles, the price to explore space will drop a lot. Also, it really isnt just commercial enterprise, its more of a civil society, which also includes those people who back this out of interest, be that eccentric billionaires or crowdfunded kickstarters. Goverments are much trickier, sure, though the power of coercion, they have access to enourmous resourcers, but they are also risk-adverse and inefficient, to say nothing of the sad fact that they are just battlegrounds between different groups of welfare-recipients. It would be nice, if governments started backing space, but I don't see how we can count on it. If, as a minimum, we could just get them to stop their destructive and needless interfering.

Yann Hamiaux I agree with Neil deGrasse Tyson, as I understand the need to make the public aware how important it's to keep the governments funding and keep in mind how many different projects/discoveries NASA put ahead within only 5 decades! With the success, innovations and great media broadcast of SpaceX (where SpaceX & Tesla bring on a regular basis interesting news which capture our imagination), we can conclude... maybe private entity + a program funded by people = a space programs that could move up as the speed of computer technologies over the last 30 years!? But, the reality is that you need especially a low penalty program, which is also sustainable in time, on failure to allows high risk to be taken and were failure represents a learning/improving experience. Governments tend to be slow to react... and that pace of speed also brings some warranties to the private industries that the commitment is there for a few/couples of years. Private industries or people, could move way faster, turning down within a matter of days or hours, sometimes on a speculation story which is obviously false by those who understand the technical details involved!

William Baughman I also vote to go back to the moon before going on to Mars. I believe we really do not know all that much about the moon. Between the satellites send and the Apollo program, we have not spent that much time and resources studying the moon. The moon itself, given potential resources, is a legitimate object of study on its own. Also living on the moon will give us experience in handing solar events and radiation events, which will be crucial to a successful Mars mission. I vote to keep the plants on the set as opposed to models and the other stuff. wba1
