A Little Something For the Staff
With your help, we've increased our staff's workload by adding more stories. Now let's give them a pay raise to help compensate for that.
About
Neil Clarke is the editor and publisher of Clarkesworld, a Hugo Award-winning science fiction and fantasy magazine. Since his dream job doesn't pay all the bills or feed his kids (yet), he is forced to keep a full-time job at a local university.

Clarkesworld (clarkesworldmagazine.com) is a science fiction & fantasy magazine that has been publishing free monthly issues online for over eight years. Each issue includes six-to-eight short stories (which are also podcast over the course of the month) and four non-fiction pieces. We have won three Hugo Awards, a British Fantasy Award, and a World Fantasy Award. Our fiction has been nominated for or won the Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy, Sturgeon, Locus, Shirley Jackson, Ditmar, WSFA Small Press and Stoker Awards.
Producing a magazine like Clarkesworld is not without costs, however. We pay our authors, artists, and other contributors professional rates. Our staff makes a little money (we'd like to see that increase) for the countless hours they put into creating this magazine in their spare time. We've always counted on our readers and listeners to help us pay the bills, typically via donations or paid subscriptions at places like Amazon, Apple, B&N, Google Play or Weightless Books. We're not content to merely sustain the magazine as it is. We'd like it to grow and to do so, we need to continue to find new and stable sources of income.

Enter Patreon. One of the things we've learned from selling subscriptions is that having a steady and reliable source of income is essential to long-term planning and sustainability. One-time donations are great, but they have to be treated more like a rainy day fund. Patreon provides an opportunity for our supporters to contribute to our operating budget in a more dependable way. Every patron will be providing us with that extra little bit we need to make Clarkesworld the best it can be.
Ok, but what's in it for me?
Aside from helping us continue to publish and expand Clarkesworld, patrons will be entered into our citizenship program. Every patron starts as a tourist, but after they've stayed with us long enough they are granted honorary citizenship. Every citizen gets their name (or an appropriate alias) listed in the census appendix of our annual print and ebook anthologies. Stay with us longer and you'll earn honorary titles as you move up through the ranks of burgermeister, royalty, and overlord.
We're passionate about providing free online stories in text and audio. Our first few goals are to add another original story to all editions (online/ebook/podcast) of Clarkesworld, but we also want to invest in better podcasting equipment, feature more works in translation, add our non-fiction content to the podcast, and pay our staff a reasonable wage. You have the power to make those things happen.
Thank you.
