Hello death-curious darlings!
Through this Patreon portal, you can support the work I do and help me on my mission to raise death awareness.

Sounds good Claudia, tell me more about your work?

Back in 2016 I started a website named A Course in Dying. It initially began as a platform to publish my research on the subject of mortality. We are all going to die, but why are we so uncomfortable with the idea of death? With A Course in Dying I aim to restore our natural relationship with death through death-positive interviews, articles & videos on death rituals, dealing with grief, and more. I also create cemetery reviews in which I visit epic cemeteries all around the world and report back to you on their beauty & historical value.

Can you elaborate on the term "death awareness"?

Death awareness is an expression that can be taken quite literally: the awareness of death. The awareness of the inevitable fact that we will all some day die. It is the modern-day version of the Latin phrase Memento Mori: 'remember that you must die'.

How did you become fascinated with the subject of death?

I've been intrigued by death ever since I can remember. I live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands - if you hear an accent in my videos it's because I'm Dutch! - and growing up in this area I noticed how people have a hard time dealing with loss, and openly talking about the end of life. Through my own experiences, for example the death of my parents, I noticed how death still is a taboo subject for some and how we have lost our personal rituals related to dying and grieving. All of this has inspired me immensely in my work.

What are you currently working on?

Since 2016 A Course in Dying has grown out into a popular platform in the death-positive world. My work has shifted from solely writing articles to inventing new ways to help people explore their own relationship with death. I create videos on youtube about all things death related, with tips on coping with grief, the history of death rituals and our many interpretations of the meaning of the big unknown. My cemetery reviews will from now on only be done in video format! This way I can really take you along on my cemetery explorations. I am excited for you to join me and let me inspire you to get more familiar with your own mortality.

How exactly will my financial aid help you?

Your support will help me increase the speed and volume of the content I put out. You will help me cover the monthly expenses I make (think about everything you need to run an online business such as webhosting, software subscriptions, etc). Your support will also allow me to invest in new equipment (camera, lights, microphone, you name it) and hopefully enable me to outsource some of my work, like video editing, which is a time-consuming monster for a perfectionist like moi.

The quality and quantity of my articles & videos will improve, more people will be inspired to contemplate mortality, and we will slowly but surely break the taboo on death! And live our best lives possible, in the meantime 🖤

Thank you for your support!

PS: You can view the merch I have available as rewards here in my webshop, where you can also buy the items separately. If you prefer to make a one-time donation to A Course in Dying, you can do this through paypal.
5 of 50 patrons
Reaching 50 patrons will be a great confirmation of your appreciation for the content I create. I will celebrate this milestone with a glass of champagne under the full moon, in an old mansion out in the woods, where I will record a special Patreon-only AMA video.
