About Clay & Milk

Who We Are

Clay & Milk started in 2016 on the theory that the Iowa innovation community was beginning to thrive and that people had a strong interest in reading about new ventures happening throughout the state.

Clay & Milk has had a great start and we've developed an enthusiastic readership. In the last two years, we’ve published over 1,000 stories and have had over 300,000 visits to our site.

We've proven that there is a strong demand for the type of work Clay & Milk is producing. We have readers. We want Clay & Milk to go on for a long time. We need to make Clay & Milk self-sustaining in order for that to happen.

So far, we have two methods of bringing in income:

1)  Company Sponsorships. Since its inception, Clay & Milk has been supported by Iowa companies that have overlapping interests with us and want to help move the Iowa innovation community forward.
2) The Clay & Milk Job Board. Earlier this year, we started the Clay & Milk job board for people to find and submit tech jobs in Iowa.

While these have both been great, they are not enough to make Clay & Milk self-sustaining. For that reason, we are adding Patreon to our site.

The way Patreon works is readers can donate whatever they want per month and the donation is recurring each month after that. So anything, from $5/month up, is hugely helpful to our cause.

What We'll Use the Money For

  • People. This takes up the vast majority of our costs. We have to have people out interviewing entrepreneurs and writing our stories.
  • Hosting. We need a robust enough hosting plan that can support our growing audience.
  • MailChimp. The service we use to email posts out to the subscription list. This fee grows as the email list grows.
  • Ongoing web development. It's a website, so there are always upsetting glitches coming out of nowhere and occasionally, we add a new site feature. Neither of us has any programming skills, so we need to pay someone for this.

All money recieved from patrons plus our sponsorships and income from our job board will help Clay & Milk move towards being self-sustainable as it continues to grow.
