About Coax Records

Please note: All support is in USD. I tried to adjust it to Canadian, but the don't use any other currency.

Coax Records is a 100% profit share to artists record label based on the unceded territories of the Lekwungen peoples near Victoria, Canada. The label was started by Rae Spoon in 2015 to give support to artists who don't necessarily find mainstream funding or music industry support because of their identities. We've released thirty-nine albums by twenty-eight artists, many of whom have received a lot of media attention, won Juno Awards and been nominated for Polaris Prizes.

Because of our profit model is on of community building, by giving all profits to the artists, our metrics for success aren't always recognized by mainstream funding channels. We work with artists because we believe their work to be exceptional, they are open to oppressive practices and they're also engaged in nurturing their own local arts communities not because we think we can make money off of their music.

The question of labour is a complex one. Without taking money from sales, Rae Spoon has been running the label for the past five years. The discrimination they faced as a non-binary artist with CPTSD in the music industry was deeply effecting their mental health. They saw the label as a way to support other people facing similar stresses. The aim is to build community where artists from lots of backgrounds can share their music and identities on their own terms.

Recently Rae was diagnosed with cancer and is in treatment for the next year. They have created a position for an employee to aid the in running the label for that time. Rae doesn't mind using their own resources to keep Coax Records going if there aren't enough donations to cover it. Any support from patrons will go directly to paying a wage for an employee and other administrative costs.

Goals
$207.52 of $500 per month
This amount will fully cover the support hired during the time of Rae's treatment from May 2020 to January 2021. We'll let patrons know when that period of time is over and Rae can come back and work without charging the label. Any extra money will be used to amplify the work of marginalized folks releasing music.
