About Cole Matson

Thank you for joining me on this journey to found a new religious institute in the Roman Catholic Church dedicated to ministry through the arts and to artists!

I have been discerning the foundation of a new religious community for artists for eight years, since writing down the idea while on retreat at Pluscarden Abbey in January 2012. I have been in private vows for seven years to discern the idea, spending that time working with and serving artists in the following ways:

In Spring 2020, I felt called to take the next step: To find a bishop who would be open to overseeing a religious community for artists, and to enter religious formation with an existing community.

Thankfully, a priest friend connected me to Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conv., of Lexington, Kentucky, who has expressed his support for beginning the community in his diocese. My first assignment was to find a religious community in which to do initial and ongoing formation for both myself and any companions who may join me.

Therefore, on May 1st, 2021, I am entering the novitiate at Portsmouth Abbey in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Portsmouth Abbey is a member of the English Benedictine Congregation, with which I became familiar during my time studying in the UK. In addition, half of the monks have an artistic background, and the monastery and Congregation focus primarily on intellectual and creative work, mostly education, which is a good fit with the purpose of the religious community for artists.

Since I am being formed for a new community and not for permanent membership at Portsmouth, I am responsible for a portion of my own expenses, including healthcare, clothing, and any incidental expenses which the typical novice would not incur. I also will not be able to work during novitiate, so these costs will be paid out of my savings.

Some of my friends have asked how they can contribute to this mission, so I have set up this Patreon page. Anything you would like to contribute toward formation expenses would be appreciated. I will keep you and your intentions in my prayers, and keep you updated on the status of the community. In addition, please let me know if I can be of assistance to you in any way.

Any extra funds received that don't need to be used on formation costs will be saved to help with the purchase of a property in the Diocese of Lexington that can serve as a house of discernment for the community and a house of retreat for artists.

Many thanks, and please pray that this community will come to fruition in the manner and timing of God's will! If you or anyone you know might be interested in discerning a vocation with this community, have any questions, or would like to offer additional forms of support, please contact me at [email protected].
