About

      Welcome to The Sanctuary!

We're creating a place to have conversations on being human that bridge the gap across the many divides that create 'us vs them' and 'the other'. Come join us!

Rarely in life do we have a place to explore the ‘don’t go there’ topics, ask potentially awkward questions, and broaden our perspective without being shamed and named. We’re creating a community where you can feel what you need to, ask what you want to, and hash it out with others who are also figuring out what it means to return to their truest selves as the global landscape rapidly changes. Because this is what we need too right now.

      What it Is

Conversations on Being Human is a podcast exploring themes that connect us to a shared human experience. We have these conversations with each other, and with others who have a unique perspective and add a distinct flavour to the conversation.

We’re recording episodes with the Seasons; each season having a theme. Episodes are released twice a month so you can rest and digest between each one.

Season 1: Let’s talk about Race (Available immediately to all Patreon Listeners)
Season 2: What’s it like to be you? (To be released October 2020)
Season 3: How to Love, not who to Love (Anticipated release in Spring 2021)

Monthly Sanctuary gatherings are held for our Patreon community so that we can learn from each other and our elders, and have some fun while finding your unique flavour of compassionate action.

These gatherings are open to all humans. We’re intentionally inviting a ‘mixed’ crowd, which might at the outset seem, ‘Woah, isn’t better to process your stuff with your own people?” If that’s what you need right now we're seeing places like this being created and encourage you to find one.

We see The Sanctuary as your yoga mat, a place to meet the potentially uncomfortable with compassion and care. If that's what you're needing, we are your people.

      How you can Join Us

      Our Values

We hold the vision for using GRACE as a bridge between individuals, groups, ideas, and differences.

Generosity & Gratitude: We stand for making the most generous assumption that I, you, and another is doing the best they can with what they have, and finding gratitude for the opportunity to learn and grow from interactions with those that are different to us.

Respect & Reverence: We treat each other with respect and dignity, even when our stuff gets triggered. We see each human as a divine creation and stand in reverence of the possibility that perhaps we might get a glimpse of God through interacting with another human.

Acceptance & Awe: We aim to accept our own imperfections and flaws so that we have a greater capacity to accept the imperfections and flaws of others. We also believe in the awesomeness of each person and hold a vision for the individual embodiment of our passion and purpose.

Care, Cooperation & Curiosity: We recognize that in community, we balance the different needs of each person as well as the group. We encourage taking good care of yourself in order to offer that care to others. Tread lightly. Cooperate, even with what feels difficult. When you don’t understand, ask a question. What can I learn in this moment?

Empathy & Enjoyment: We are on the journey with you and each other. Even if we haven’t walked in your exact shoes we stand next to you. We also want to share our joys with you. Chances are there's at least one thing we can laugh and cry about together.

In a nutshell, you’re invited to come as you are, and we hope that by walking with GRACE, we chip away at the shackles that we all know all too well: the idolization of perfectionism, the fear of vulnerability, and shame projected as self-righteous judgement.

To allow ourselves to live in GRACE we do not tolerate blatant bullying, passive-aggressive comments, judgement, or shaming of ourselves or others in the Sanctuary. While you don’t have to be perfect, and we anticipate trip-ups and foot-in-mouth moments, we first and foremost invite your adult self to join us.

      About Us

Amber and Kendra met in 2016 in Wales. Amber, a 20-something medical student from the British Virgin Islands and Kendra,a 30-something writer and coach from NYC, from the outset you might not expect there was a lot in common. Yet there was an instant connection as they shared an experience of fighting with their body and food in order to maintain self-worth.

Their desire to create The Sanctuary grew out of another shared experience prompted by George Flloyd’s death in June 2020, and the rioting and divisiveness that followed in the US and UK.

“I was feeling heartbroken about what had happened, bewildered about how people were responding, and guilty about my ignorance and the blind eye I’ve turned towards things that matter, like racism and other inequalities. I felt lost in the mire and even though part of me wanted to take action, I knew jumping in the game at the 11th hour with my back up wouldn’t do any good, nor was it really what I needed. I needed a friend. Someone I could be real with. And who could also offer me a different point of view and maybe help me understand what was going on for me as well as everyone else. I called Amber and asked her if she’d be willing to talk and help me learn what I didn’t know I needed to know.” - Kendra

“I was feeling a mixture of anxiety and hopefulness. I had seen a few cycles of police brutality -> protest -> return to normal. This time the momentum felt different, I wanted to contribute to the struggle for equality with compassion. When I got Kendra’s call, I offered instead of educating her, to share with her. Racism is a social construct and outside of that we are both two human beings with different life experiences. Our conversation felt like a sigh of relief. Finally, I was able to have an honest conversation and unpack questions like, “Why do people seem to be afraid to say the word black?”.” - Amber

Amber and Kendra both wear many hats in life. You can connect with Amber at [email protected] or an Instagram @herbal.amber and Kendra atwww.kendra-tanner.com, Instagram @kendra.tanner and Facebook @kendratannercoaching.

The conversations we’re having are vulnerable and ask us to dig deep. We put a lot of care into bringing our whole selves to the table and for that need nourishment. We are nourished knowing that the baring of our hearts nourishes you. Your financial support symbolizes the exchange that happens when you hear our words.

What we receive from you is more than just money in our pockets. It’s the fuel for us to keep going even when we’re treading on dodgy terrain. It also pays for practical things like microphones so you can hear us clearly, and the technical expertise of our support team.

      Our Goals:

Our number one goal is see members of our Patreon community bridging the gap in their own lives in embodied, doable, and authentic ways. This could be anything from befriending an elderly neighbor, reconciling with a family member, or starting a community project that connects with a marginalized group.

We'd love for The Sanctuary to include 100 people by the end of 2020.
Growing our community to 100 people signals to us that the message is taking root. For this we'll have a party!
