Hi, I'm Jonathan. I have been blessed for many years to be involved with a supportive and collaborative community of experimental analog game designers. You might know my work from Geiger Counter, the Planarch Codex, the Indie Mixtape project, or from when I ran Game Chef (the annual game design competition) from 2009-2012. I'm currently a PhD student at UCSD, where I hope to use my background in both the policy world and indie game design to make "serious games" that allow players to explore and better understand complex real-world dynamics.

I've launched this Patreon project to provide a better structure for developing and releasing new game materials by myself and other folks, some serious and some just pure fun, but all of which aim to be provocative and/or innovative. All of these projects are inherently collaborative, and in many ways I'm more excited to help other folks release their games than to finally release some of my own stuff. The plan right now is that games will be released every few months, but you might see monthly releases over the summer (no promises).

(examples of possible future releases)

In financial terms, my PhD program is funded, but it doesn't cover several months during the summer. In addition, many of the collaborative game design projects I organize are for charitable causes. Having funding through Patreon will allow me to spend more time finishing, organizing, publishing, and promoting games, rather than doing freelance design and editing work to make ends meet. It will also allow me to contribute the legwork to help publish other folks' games and then hand over the reins completely.

Things this project will fund include:

(1) new games by myself and/or other indie designers that aim to push the boundaries of what games can be, what kinds of stories we can tell, and what kinds of experiences can be had;

(2) anthologies of new games by a mixture of veteran and up-and-coming game designers (such as the Indie Mixtape series), expanding the array of voices in indie games and creating a platform for designers to publish short games that they maintain the rights to;

(3) supplements for some of my favorite indie games that take them in new directions (I hope to be able to use some of the funding to purchase PDFs of the original games for backers who do not already own them, but that will depend on negotiations with the original designers);

(4) travel to conventions so that I can share these games with you (which will always be accompanied by a small game release of some sort, as well as a report from the trip that talks about what I played and what I learned from the experience).

(more possibilities)

Thanks in advance for your support, and I look forward to making great things together!

Note that I may need to update the setup of this Patreon as we go, since I'm new at publishing games this way, despite being experienced in other kinds of publishing. Rest assured that any changes will be announced ahead of time, in case you want to change your settings.
