Universal Basic Income
After reading
Scott Santens recent piece on the increasingly pressing need for a Universal Basic Income, I've come to understand that what I've been working toward on Patreon since 2013 has been, essentially, an effort to create a universal basic income for myself, so that I can survive, and thus have creative freedom I don't have access to as long as I'm constantly worrying about how to address my most basic needs.
Like Scott, I consider $1,000 per month an appropriate starting level for a basic income in the US (in 2014) - but will need 10% to cover Patreon's cut and transaction fees ($1,111 - 10% = $1,000), and 30% to cover self employment taxes against the income generated ($1,111 + $300 = $1,411).
Once I hit $1,411, my basic income is achieved, along with the ability to move through life with just a little less resting asspucker. My my my, would that feel glorious!
