About

A lifetime of being tangled in language has convinced me that engaging writing arises from a joyful and disciplined practice, play with language, and a willingness to embrace our identities. On this site, you'll see how I write from the emotional, the cultural, and the creative parts of me. How this crazy Black writer explores the geography of composition.

For over 40 years, I've been a college writing teacher, journalist, freelance writer, and editor. I've published a range of work, from fiction to academic articles to essays, and I've taught thousand of students over the years how to express themselves about issues they care about in ways that connect with readers. On this site, I'll break down my approach to how you can build your own writing process, I'll reveal behind-the-scenes notes and drafts to demonstrate how writing goes from messy bits of text to finished pieces, and I'll give you sneak peeks into my longer fiction and non-fiction works-in-progress.

Your support will enable me to link the two strains of my love of writing: to produce longer fiction and non-fiction work over which I can have full creative control, and to share my passion for teaching and exploring what writing can do for us, how it can expand our ability to understand and connect with others.
