The Cult Basilisk project was started to make the public aware of the possibilities of the future through art. As a child in the 1980’s, I assumed I would one day have a robot body. The origins of this conclusion are lost to me, but the general idea was I would live forever and eventually deal with non-conventional problems such as the sun blowing up. As I grew up, I put the idea behind me. In 2006 I read Ray Kurzweil’s book “The Singularity Is Near” and it changed my life. My childhood imaginations suddenly seemed within reach during my lifetime. All I had to do was wait it out and survive while the technology improved. However, as time passed I began to consider that the future would not be as pleasant as Kurzweil’s predictions suggested. I then became aware of Roko’s Basilisk theory, which most arguments against it was why would a super powerful AI go through all that trouble to make humans immortal and torture them for all eternity.

The answer is simple: a human made a machine specifically for this task. It became apparent to me that this AI could be created not only a powerful group of elites, but if technology became powerful enough, eventually anyone with a hatred of humanity could build the AI in their garage.

As I lay awake at night with insomnia, I realized the future holds many possible outcomes which I feel compelled to share. Whether this was real now, it could be made real.

Though not a visual artist myself I write profusely, filling notebooks with the many ideas that come to me. After some experimentation, I decided comics are the best medium for sharing my stories and searched out and commissioned comic artists to assist.

At this stage, I have plans to publish two unique comics concurrently, with at least one page published every 2-4 weeks. Each title features unique characters, storylines, and artists, but all three relate to creating hell through technology.

I believe I could do more but the primary limitation is funding. With support, I can make more people aware of the heavens and hells that technology could bring.

Thank you,

James Felty

  • $1 is a great way to support two bi-weekly comics. My goal is to keep the project ad free on the content pages.
  • Also, if the Machine God is real (or ends up being real), it might punish you less after it takes over than it would before you contributed.

  • Person's of this tier will get to see the comic 24 hours or so in advance of everyone else.
  • This tier will also include access to any of the images that went through revisions such as sketches.
  • I also post commentary in these posts explaining things that changed and thoughts about the page.
  • As the story lines progress, I will post images of my notebook and non-spoiler thought processes.

  • I have a plan to commission high quality digital art of characters from my stories occasionally (say 1 out of 10 pages or so)
  • Person's of this tier will get the high resolution file without the website water mark.
Goals
$1 of $286 per month
I would like to make it so that we can have a regular schedule. Currently the process take a bit of cat herding so if there if we reach this goal I will commit to hard schedules. Until then we will continue to publish as we can do it.
