Cunning & Grace : Wilder Intelligence for Uncertain Times.

Good to see you here friend. My name is Laura and I have spent a lifetime tracking unlikely capabilities that itinerant artists at the edges have carried for centuries. These capabilities - whether learned intentionally, or through life's hard knocks, aggregate into a wisdom I call cunning. Cunning wisdom includes the capacity to creatively transgress upon socially sanctified patterns in generative ways, to hold paradox and uncertainty, to apply an aesthetic eye to complex challenges, to commune with unlikely characters, and to assume the rare, but-needed, trickster role of cross-pollinating between the dark fringes of possibility and the center of culture. To be cunning requires all our ways of knowing, including the wisdom of the body, the feeling-sense, the deep imagination, and the power of the metaphoric and pattern-seeking mind.

In this series I draw from my work with social innovators, systems transition guides, creative entrepreneurs, and wilder women who wield both cunning and grace to meet the challenges they face. This living inquiry is one that I am exploring in my doctoral work, in deep conversation with my own soul, and in relationship with the remote canyon land in which I live.

The map is never the landscape, but here are a few threads I aim to follow here through both personal narrative and interviews. It is my hope that these discussions that will take us into a place where we might reclaim essential human capacities that have been long marginalized but are needed here in these uncertain times.

  • Webs of relatedness and an animate earth
  • The power of the wryd - language, myth and story
  • All our ways of knowing - and why they are needed here now
  • Aesthetics, process and creative tension - what artists have held at the cultural fringe
  • Uncertainty, ambiguity, paradox and primal trust in the unknown
  • Soul-making - genius, daemons and human ripening
  • Ritual, creative transgression and culture change
  • And other stirrings from the margins…
