About Danielle Klassen

Welcome to my Hallowed Halls, friends!

If you are new here, I'm grateful to have you checking out my Patreon. If you are returning, you might have noticed some minor changes I've made to the place. Well, pull up a chair and a cup of tea as I tell you what brought us all to this moment where you've found yourself reading an online introduction and I'll go over why you might consider joining me here and contributing to my work.

My name is Danielle and I am a horror writer and general nerd living in the wilds of Canada. For years, like many artists before me, I've been working the back roads of the creative highways of the internet, writing reviews, creating serial fiction and all manner of other weird things, including a couple of book projects that you can find on Amazon. The thing is, I love to learn and I have been trying to figure out a way to integrate my degree in communications and a second degree that combined my love of all things language, folklore, literature and pop culture into something tangible that would make these achievements more than just fancy papers on my wall. The solution to this came about when a dear friend of mine suggested that I start a podcast and after some thought, I did just that. As of August 29, 2020, The Armchair Scholar's Guide made it's way to the public for all to see.

When I came up with this podcast, the idea was simply to have some content that I wanted to hear out in the world. As I've been working on these first episodes, I realized that I landed on something bigger than I'd expected and it's become something I'm very passionate about. My podcast is about lore, tropes and familiar stories that we see in pop culture media but ultimately, it's about giving space to talking about the media we consume and really looking it over for what kinds of things it says about us and what it can teach us. In developing this concept and working on it, one of the biggest snags I've come upon is how often the information I want to bring to you is wrapped up in places that you cannot get to unless you're a student or you know someone. Part of creating this podcast was to create something where you could get those resources and you would have access to that information without it being buried in a text book that costs over two hundred dollars or it being locked away behind a database paywall that you might not even be able to access all of it. For those who are scratching their heads about me talking about this on Patreon, rest assured that while you can get early access to links and show notes, that information is always going to be available to you so that you too can do your own research and find resources to help you whether you're writing a paper, or you're just wanting to know more.

And here's where I get to the why of using Patreon and what my actual goals are. I have been working at freelance writing on the side of having a regular pay cheque for years, including the release of the books that I mentioned before. Currently, it's not a stable, or viable income at all. This becomes tricky for any content creator when you're trying to pull down a full time job and trying to put out more creative works at the same time. This gets even more difficult when you're the only person involved in this endeavour and when you add a research heavy podcast on top of everything, it can be a bit much. I will stress that this project is a labor of love and I enjoy doing it but I also enjoy eating, shelter and sleeping as much as anyone else. For my podcast in particular, the output requires months of research and writing before I can even think of recording and editing what I have, and all of this falls on my shoulders while I am still writing books on the side. What Patreon allows me to do is offer you incentives for things like early access, transcripts, additional content and merch in exchange for some relief on my time and stress levels. The extra that I make off this platform goes directly to feeding me and my cat as well as keeping a roof over my head and allowing me to be creative and keep the content coming regularly. With time, maybe it can also be expanded into other areas that you, the Patrons, want to see.

There is a lot that I want to accomplish with this podcast, with my site and with Patreon. I hope that you will be able to join me for it but even if you can't, I want to stress that any support is good support. You can do this by sharing this page or the content that I provide or even just liking and commenting on it on places like Instagram or Youtube. Your participation is more valuable than you will ever know and I am excited to have you here for the journey, no matter what part you're playing along the way. For those of you who have come here and read my introduction, thank you so much for making it this far. I hope you'll join me and until next time, keep studying and wherever possible, let curiosity be your guide!
