Greetings! I’m Darrell Hardy, freelance writer, game designer, and (wait for it) STORYWORLD ARCHITECT.
“Whoa, there!” you may be saying. “That’s a mighty pretentious thing to be calling yourself, pal. What’s that supposed to mean?”
It means that I specialize in creating new worlds that are stuffed to the metaphorical gills with exciting conflicts, intriguing characters, and hundreds of stories just waiting to be told. These are the kinds of worlds that support games, novels, comics, and… and… weird interactive puppet shows. Each with its own stories. And all at the same time!
Enough About Me. Let's Talk About My WebsiteOn my website, I write about how to create these storyworlds, with plenty of tips and tricks and bulleted lists. I've often designed such worlds myself right there on the blog. It’s useful to practice what I preach, and to show how the various pieces come together to create an awesome storyworld. And what's more, I enjoy doing it.
I love world-building. I would love to do more of it on my website. But as a freelancer, it’s hard to justify the time required to do it right. Oh, I can squeeze in a little blog entry or two every couple months (and I do!), but at this rate, it will take forever to finish off a single world.
That’s where Patreon comes in.
Now Let's Talk About PatreonI have dozens of storyworlds to create. Some I’ve started on already, and others are just scribbles in a notebook labeled, “Wouldn’t this be cool?” With the power of Patreon, I can afford to give these worlds the time they deserve, and to turn these raw ideas into tangible things I can share with others.
What’s more, I can take patrons behind the scenes. So you not only get to see the world-building process in action, you get to actually be part of the process. Worlds are big, with lots of details. When figuring out those details, I hope to turn to my patrons and ask questions like, “What do you think would be cooler, eagle-riders or dragon-riders?” or “Which sounds more sinister, ‘League of Shadows’ or ‘Shadow Syndicate’?”
Let's Talk About the Worlds You're Helping CreateSo what are these worlds of which I speak? Here are the first few ideas I have in mind:
Empire of Venom and Silk is a grim, low fantasy setting in which desperate humans fight for survival against an occupying army of giant spiders. It’s also the storyworld that I’ve spent the most time exploring on my website. Working on this project was a great deal of fun, but when I ran out “free” time to work on it, I had to set it aside…. Which is when the idea for this Patreon was born.
In the sci-fi storyworld of Planet Override, roving outlaws fight for freedom on the open roads of a far-future colony planet ruled by a tyrannical off-world corporation. Or if you prefer the elevator pitch, Planet Override is “Easy Rider meets Firefly on Mars.” It’s got motorcycles, faceless corporate thugs, and hardened heroes with hearts of gold.
The Teslanauts storyworld is set in the late Victorian era of an alternate history in which rival nations use interplanetary teleportation to explore and battle for control of alien planets. In this world, Nikola Tesla invented a long-range matter transmitter device in the late 1800s, which the European powers used to expand their empire-building efforts to include dozens of habitable planets. Now, instead of continents, they have entire worlds to claim, conquer, and plunder—and the explorers and colonists known as teslanauts are at the forefront of this effort.
Of course, this is just the beginning. I’ve got a backlog of storyworld ideas, and together, we can start bringing them to life!
