About David Tovey Art

David Tovey is a formerly homeless artist, educator and activist who works in a range of media. He is a photographer, painter as well as an installation artist and performance-maker. At the heart of David's practice is a very special quality - the ability to bring you to the subject in ways both beautiful and hard-hitting in equal measure in order to raise awareness about the social issues he tackles.
David has exhibited internationally in locations such as Somerset House, Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool, Montreal and he is also the founder of the UK’s first One Festival of Homeless arts.
He speaks regularly at housing and homelessness events and teaches art to people experiencing homelessness at the Pilion Trust and Passage Day Centre.
His Man on Bench performances have earned him significant acclaim and have taken place on the pavement of the Southbank and the halls of Tate Exchange.

Let me tell you a little bit more about Man on Bench and my other plans;

Man on Bench is a participatory performance art piece. The work involves hand creating couture out of discarded clothing and directing volunteer models to perform a narrative informed by the artist’s experience of homelessness. The previous two iterations have focused on the idea of a catwalk, taking tropes from high fashion and reshuffling them, placing ownership of beauty firmly in the realm of society’s most rejected people.
The Man on Bench is the artist. Physical and psychological traces of David’s homelessness are embodied in the artwork. Its repetition and development are an integral part of David’s recovery process.
Man on Bench Fairytale is an ambitious, spectacular and mesmerising staging of David's story. The artwork developed to incorporate operatic elements and addressed universal themes – life and death, despair and redemption, adversity and triumph. Man on Bench takes place in the public realm, interrupting everyday life to convey not only that there is beauty to be found in rubbish, but also that we all share common hopes and fears. Together, we can connect with the metaphors and meanings that are found in fairytales. Thus ending in a triumph of a show.

I have started on some new work which is taking me to a once dark part of my life.

The 1st body of work addresses the lonely journey of suicide, The moments before and after the decision to take my life. The acceptance and the panic. I never wanted to end my life at the time when I attempted to take it. I just didn't feel I had any other option.

The 2nd body of work addresses a subject I keep coming back to, Abuse.
Abused from oneself, from others, from mental health and addiction.
We all suffer in one way.
But why are we all so scared to talk about it, to admit it, to except it.
Embrace it I say, as it already embraces us. Don’t be ashamed of it, talk about it, and share it.

Please Help me build my art practice so that I can raise awareness of social issues that effect so many in society. My work is predominately about Homelessness, Addiction, Mental health, Abuse and Suicide.  So thank you for caring and helping me raise awareness of these social issue's with art.  The arts can truly save peoples lives, They saved mine.

A Man On Bench Fairytale

‘Day by day people walk past
I try to be invisible but I need to survive
I have my habit but I also need to eat.

(Scum of the earth, lazy, useless, con artist, loser, unworthy, waste of space)
I’ve heard it all. It hurts, the damage is never gone, I have no answers, no way out from this hell hole I’m living in.

But I Can take control of my future, there’s only one option left for me….’

David is sat on a bench taking an overdose and collapses to the floor, His heart stops. Silence…
The grim reaper comes to take his soul.

As paramedics try to save his life angels surround and protect David and the paramedics.
Then an overpowering blast of light comes from within David

The grim reaper is blown away

Up rises David into a sea of fashion and song and dance
