I'm Dawn Greenfield Ireland, and I need help making ends meet while I continue to create.

I'm a creator of worlds, characters and creatures. So far, I've published three science fiction novels, three cozy mystery novels, one steamy shifter romance, and three nonfiction books. The second Thol book will be out the door before December 2018.

Many of my novels, screenplays and nonfiction books have won awards: Book Excellence, Readers Favorite, eLit Award, AudioFile awards (audio books), IPPY Finalist award, 13Horror.com Finalist award, WIFT/TV Reel Dialogues Script Winner. If you see something that doesn't have some sort of an award sticker on the cover that means I've been too busy to submit it into a competition or ran out of funds. Poke around my website. Sign up for my newsletter. I try to post one image related to my work to Instagram every day. Check it out and give me a Like and a Follow.

Why do I need a Patreon?

Here's the problem: there's not enough money to go around. I find myself always begging someone for help. Covers, formatting and editing can get expensive. I want my books to look professionally spotless. That's how awards are won and sales bloom.

Writing income isn't a steady stream. It's highly unreliable and eek's in and then it's gone. I haven't earned enough to buy dental or vision insurance for the past three years. My sole income is social security. My creative income ranges anywhere from $10 to $200 per month. It's unreliable.

No, I didn't think ahead to the day where I wasn't earning money as a technical writer. Those jobs were contract positions and all my spare money went into my writing projects. So, now I'm stuck like Chuck trying to figure out how to make ends meet and keep writing full time.

Currently I'm at a deficit each month that goes onto credit cards. It sucks. Winter is approaching and I'll have to figure out how to pay for oil to heat the house (until the house sells and I can get back to Texas). I'm to the point where I can barely pay the minimum balances on the credit cards.

I made a big mistake in 2015 when I was downsized from my tech writing job. Since both my sons had moved to the east coast I figured I'd move to be closer to them. Big, big mistake. They are busy with their own families. Plus, the house I bought nearly did me in. All my money went into thousands of dollars of plumbing and electrical problems that weren't evident in the inspection. So my nest egg cracked. Lessons learned.

But there's hope. I wrote the first draft of Bonded in 29 days. I know I can get one book created each quarter. Believe me, there are so many projects lined up I could write beyond the grave.

So what DO I want?
I want people to invest in my writing business so I can be more productive. Here's a list of things I'd like to accomplish in the foreseeable future:

  • Complete the 2nd book in the Bonded series in 2018;
  • Write the 4th book in the Alcott Family Adventures chocolate series (2019);
  • Adapt my screenplays into novels (there are 15) (2019+);
  • Create short stories for my Patreon supporters.

How will your patronage help?

I'll sleep easier. Worrying about making ends meet and racking up credit cards to pay for services isn't my idea of a good time. I literally do not go anywhere except for the grocery store, post office and library. I spend only $25 on gasoline for the month because there isn't any more money to be stretched for other trips around town.

I need an additional $2000/month over what social security pays me. Your patronage will help me to make ends meet in my budget, have money to pay for book covers, formatting, editing, entering competitions, toner for the printer, and everything related to my business.

All of my books are self published under the ISBN of my company Artistic Origins. One of my goals with my Patreon is to raise enough money to pay for a Kirkus Indie Review for my dystopian novel The Last Dog. This book has recently won a 2018 Book Excellence award and a Readers Favorite award.

The Indie review is for self published authors. A good review could change my career trajectory overnight.

I need your help to stay afloat while I continue to create my novels, scripts and nonfiction content. I have not worked in my trade as a technical writer in over two years. What it boils down to is, you reach a certain age and you're set aside. Instead of being revered for your experience you're plunked down in the pasture with limited income. That's what happened here. Most of my 34-year career as a technical writer was as a contractor. Almost all my money went into supporting my creative career -- that into the night writing.

Competitions help a writer move ahead in the overall scheme of things. The more you can enter the better your chance of gaining status over your competitors. I don't have a budget for marketing so what I do instead is send out an attractive newsletter with information about my current project and other things related to writing. I also share news from writer friends.

So, what do YOU get?

All patrons from the $5/month level and up will get access to monthly exclusive content which you can virtually download and view as I post. At least once per month you will receive one of the following:
  • A short story from one of my characters;
  • A detailed description (no artwork, sorry) of one of my creatures from Thol;
  • Rex's snarky opinion of the happenings between 2030 - 2086, no holds barred. Rex thinks highly of himself;
  • First dibs on any new novel I release.
  • News or pictures from/about Midnight and Lola Jean, my two frisky kitties.
The novels will be drafts, but pretty squeaky clean.
