Howdy!

I'm a singer/songwriter, storyteller, and actor. A couple of years ago, I decided to devote any free time I could find to making and performing my music. I discovered when I have a challenge in my life, the best way to process that challenge is to write a song about it and then perform it. It kind of purges…but not like the movie... In the conscious process of creating and then performing, I discovered that my audiences strongly (kind of surprisingly how strongly) connected with my music. My songs are autobiographical and responses suggest that we all experience many of the same things on our journeys. Listening to the stories behind the songs and then the songs made people feel better. And it made me feel better. So I decided that I was going to devote even more energy to performing. Besides house concerts and festivals, I wrote a one-woman show that includes original music and spoken word about my experiences with online dating (gaghhh) and I have been touring it. Hooray!

My Work
I have been described as: "Part Patty Griffin... part Todd Snider...part Linda Ronstadt...ALL honest, soulful lyrics combining Americana, alt-Country, Blues, and Folk musical styles while exploring life as a progressive hillbilly girl living in the deep south.” A festival promoter said: " Dawn’s song-craft is exceptional. She is capable of painting a crystal-clear image of human experience, most of which has been drawn from her own history, in a way that is at times both humorous and poignant, joyous and bittersweet. If you have not seen and heard her perform, you are in for a treat. If you have, you’ll be ready to go back for more.” I grew up in the Ozarks amidst beautiful scenery, mountain music, storytelling and folklore. My music and performances certainly reflect my upbringing. Categories like roots, Americana, blues, folk are often used interchangeably to describe me and my work. Typically, you’ll find me in the “other” category.

So why have I chosen to create a Patreon?
I conducted an experiment last year. I played my @ss off in listening rooms, bars (though I’m a lyricist, not a rocker), and restaurants to see if I could make a living playing those types of venues. It was successful only in that I discovered the following: managers don’t want to pay much because they assume you’ll make tips and sell CDs; people don’t tip much because they assume you’re getting paid; and finally, no-one buys CDs anymore because they download and the $1.29 you pay for a song on iTunes nets me about $.03.  Recording and production, touring, costs $$$.

What can my patrons and I accomplish together?
ULTIMATELY, I want to journey in a completely new direction while I can. I want to devote all my time to making music and shows and then performing them at festivals and house concerts, maybe even sell some songs. Specifically, I want to write and record more; make more one-woman shows, tour more, and possibly even create a bi-monthly podcast. And eventually, quit the day job that I don’t like so much, sooner than later.

FOR NOW, we can finish my second CD. I think the new songs are so much better! And people are asking for them. I recorded and mixed my first CD all by myself in my home. While that was a great experience, I realized that I don’t like the mixing part. I can’t be objective. BUT studios and engineers cost $$$. Its working title is “Hillbillyland” and it includes songs that have been inspired by the Ozarks and nature. One of the songs even won a songwriting contest! Another was the result of an artist in residency!

And...we can work completing a draft of my one-woman show that I will tell only patrons about (at the D String tier level and up). It is going to use some songs from the second CD.

Projects in the foreseeable future:
Finish the new CD.
Complete a draft of a new one-woman show using traditional mountain and original comedy and music with a mountain music scholar.
Write new songs (I have a page of hook lines)
Work on adding to (and figuring out) my YouTube channel
