What is the purpose?
Defacto Books is a coalition of progressive thinkers with the intent to distribute as much literature as possible to incarcerated Brothers and Sisters in order to; enrich culture, empower and enhance life experience, destroy debilitating and self-limiting beliefs, and thus reverse the trend of mass incarceration.

Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.  -Khalil Gibran

Who are we?
Defacto is serving a 30-year sentence in the pen and deeply understands the transformative power of literature and the healing it can provide to those most in need.
"As a currently incarcerated individual with over 21 years within the criminal justice system, it is my belief that heaven is a state of mind. It is a personal passion to facilitate and shed light to my brothers on the path to truly be free. Elevation, expansion, and dominion on the mind is a God-given right. When encouraged and allowed to unfold progressively it has the power and superiority to surpass any limitations and break down any boundaries of oppression which prohibit it from truly being free."
Vanessa (Vdiggitydawg/Queen Vanessa) is an educator and prison abolitionist with over 20 years of experience teaching and advocating for disenfranchised, adjudicated Black and Latinx students. Leading students to the cathartic power of storytelling through literature study and writing opens them to creative possibilities they never knew existed. Vanessa holds a teaching certification in Texas and a B.A. in English Literature.

Why are we doing this?
To set the collective consciousness of those who have been locked into an under-caste system.
Together, these most unlikely best friends, Defacto and Vdiggity hope to heal, educate, and share their friendship as they discuss literature. The books on Defacto Book’s list are derived from a selection that was thoughtfully crafted with input from; formerly incarcerated peoples, spiritual leaders, poets, writers, educators, and members of the Black community. The books available to incarcerated Kings and Queens and can be donated via our multiple funding platforms.

What does my donation go towards?
We send incarcerated Black men and Women FREE books! Our goal is for them to create authentic discussion groups within their prospective prison units using thoughtfully crafted discussion guides created by us. There is no charge to the incarcerated men or women ever! We pay for the books, printing, and labor for discussion guides, shipping, and the time to handwrite every single Defacto Books member as an ongoing process to create community.
