At $400, we'll start thinking about expanding the site to a real-deal web host. I don't currently have the income to do this: in fact this Patreon will almost exclusively go toward paying bills, and at $400 per chapter I can actually pay my most pressing bills. Anyway. While Wordpress is nice, I have some ideas I want to implement and I need my own web space for that.

Salute!

Hi, I'm Dennis N. Santana, and I write fiction on The Spirits of Eden, a small website about my passion for all kinds of stories. I write funny stories, serious stories, weird stories. I have a great interest in serial web fiction – fiction that takes place across several episodes or chapters on the web space before concluding. I feel that serial web fiction is an interesting space. With reader input, the story could radically improve over time and be responsive to its readers in a way that "print-it-and-it's-done" traditional fiction cannot. My greatest joy in writing has always been to receive mails and comments on one episode, and to make dynamic changes as I receive feedback.

And what will you do for your nation, comrade?

Right now, the biggest thing happening on my site is The Solstice War. It is an alt-universe serial war story with parallels to World War 2, including tactics and technology. It takes place in its own world, and like me many of the primary characters are people of color and queer people of all kinds: people I would like to see represented more in action and fantasy fiction. In addition, the primary characters are all socialists, and their society is socialist as well. It's all stuff you don't see every day and I try to handle everything with care and attention. I have been publishing episodes twice a month without fail for over a year now. Each chapter is on average 10k words, though many have been larger and a few have been smaller. Over time the story has grown, and is over 400,000 words now! You can read all of that right now and decide for yourself whether it is worth supporting.

How will my hard-earned wages help the people's cause?

With Patreon, I can have an avenue to receive material support without "monetizing" the actual content. I just write, and those who love it can pay, but ultimately I want everyone to be free to read and enjoy the bulk of the story, and I don't want to make myself anxious over gating access to the content or making it exclusive. I want everyone to see it! In fact, if I receive enough funds I can potentially move from a wordpress blog to a more responsive space, fully under my control. I'm sadly not a rich person, or I would be able to write content faster, more often, and in a custom site. My material worries have greatly expanded in the past few months, and I feel like I can't make this project all that it should be, unless I receive a bit of help from my readers.

Patreon is a very safe medium to contribute.  Payment is given to me per chapter: so you are only ever charged if I perform work, and if I cannot, you do not suffer for that. I plan to release chapters twice a month, and these will be really big chapters, like 6k-10k words (it'll probably swing toward 10k average, right now a lot of these chapters are pretty thick!). Your money is withdrawn at the start of the month. So if I write two chapters and you're in for $5, just make sure you have $10 in your account by the 1st of the next month. I will NEVER charge more than twice a month. The reason I don't use the Monthly option is that I don't want to charge if I'm prevented from working.

I'd love to keep writing The Solstice War, and to tell from beginning to end this ambitious story of love, war, nationality, ideology, and the people caught up in them, as well as cool tanks and stuff. I'd also like to expand from that, and accommodate other kinds of stories, like the random scraps of stuff on the site before Solstice War began. I hope you'll join me and I hope you become as passionate about reading the stories as I am about writing them.

What if the unthinkable occurs, comrade?

You pay per chapter so you don't have a lot to lose: you get exactly what you paid for each time I post, and if I don't post you will not lose a cent you pledged. Your wallet will remain safe and sound. And I'd like to note again, I will probably only post, at the most 2 chapters a month, which would be around 20k to 30k words, and that's a decent chunk, I think! The Solstice War is a long project. I can foresee this whole story taking years to truly finish. This is a series, and it's gonna be vast like the wars that inspired it. Some people are excited by that and others are scared. I suppose I might die or become unable to write before it is finished, but I am young and I don't see that happening.

Thank you for your time, and please read the milestones and rewards before pledging!
