Hi, my name is Derek Lieu, and I'm making a bunch of stuff to teach people how to make trailers for movies and video games! Every week I write a newsletter with tips and insights about trailers, I stream game trailer critiques on Twitch, and on YouTube I make short tutorial videos, case studies, reviews and video essays.

I want to teach people how to make great trailers, and give them a greater appreciation of this unique art form. Nothing makes me happier than messages from people who were inspired to make trailers, found a career in trailers, or just enjoy reading about them. Oftentimes I hear from people who aren't even interested in making trailers, but find valuable insights in my writing.

In my day to day work, I make trailers for indie video games. I got my start in the early 2000s as an assistant editor at a movie trailer company. Over many years I made a number of fan trailers for video games, and eventually worked at a few game trailer houses in Los Angeles. I had a lot of help along the way, and I want to pass on my knowledge, because very few people making trailers are also writing about them.

What is Patreon?

Patreon lets you give support creators via small monthly donations. I never monetize the videos on my YouTube channel (some are monetized by 3rd parties), so this is the best way for you to support me and/or show your appreciation.

My indie game trailer work is what I need to spend most of my time on because it's what keeps me afloat, but your small donations will make it easier for me to take the time to make more content, without worrying I'm neglecting my business.

Rewards!

I've set my Patreon to charge you once a month. Here's what you'll get at the different tiers:

$1 - Fan
This gives you access to my exclusive Patreon feed where I'll post random musings about trailers, give behind-the-scenes looks at stuff I'm working on, and anything else that's on my mind about trailers.

$5 - Apprentice
At this tier you'll get early access to videos I put up on my YouTube, a monthly Q&A video where I'll answer your questions, and I'll occasionally send out some exclusive photos of my cats Uni and Ebi :3

$10 - Disciple
At this tier you'll be a guest at a monthly Zoom call where we can talk about whatever the heck you want. Whether it's about trailer editing, career advice, or anything I can help you out with (or you can help each other with). You'll also get to pick topics for videos and newsletter posts!
