About

Designing For is a two-man YouTube channel dedicated to bringing viewers intelligent analysis on video games. Our primary focus, the main “Designing For” series, takes a deep look into a level, boss, idea, character, or other specificity of a game and breaks down how it excellently, or perhaps not-so-excellently, epitomizes a specific theme. For example, how “The Culling” stage from Warcraft III instills the player with a sense of guilt through both narrative and action, or how “Rice Beach” from Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land is designed to play in contrast to every Mario platformer that preceded it, from its music to its level design to its mechanics.

More serious intro aside, we are a two-man operation that absolutely loves video games. Some of our earliest memories are of gaming, some of the greatest lessons we learned were because of video games, and we believe that video games can be such a powerful teaching tool for so many. However, matters of accessibility, poor implementation, or just outright bad design can keep players from experiencing a developer’s intention, or steering them away before they get to the good stuff. We hope that each episode can both show viewers something new or interesting about a game they might have overlooked and teach a lesson for those in game design to take with them as they shape the future of the industry. We try to make the kinds of videos we’d want to be shown in a game design class, with added bits of humor to make for a more personal experience.

Designing For currently uploads roughly once every ten days, but we’re hoping, with your support, to create a more consistent upload schedule. By joining us as a partner on Patreon, we will involve you in our process, helping us steer toward the content you’d like to see analyzed on the channel and giving you access to scripts and audio of episodes perhaps weeks in advance. Your contributions will help go toward improving the channel, allowing us to record footage from more systems, improve our equipment’s quality, and produce content more consistently.

But regardless, thank you so much for taking the time to view this page. We hope that video games can bring as much joy to your life as they have ours, and hope to keep entertaining and informing as best we can for as long as we can! It means the world that you enjoy our content, and we shall see you on the next episode of Designing For!
