About

I'm a hobbyist games developer working on Yaffaif:

What is Yaffaif?
Yaffaif is an adult interactive fiction (or a text adventure if you prefer) set in a fantasy universe which seems set against you as you try and reach your goals. Gradual transformation is one of the main themes, any you may struggle to retain your initial form, or go and embrace the changes the world brings upon you.

Why are you making this?
I've wanted to make a game that focuses on gradual transformation for a long time and in particular one where transformation has consequences. It's a topic that poses particular technical challenges. At the same time I didn't want to make the player uncomfortable with what was happening to their character, so my aim was to always offer multiple paths to reach any given goal and allow the player to determine how their character would approach things. I also wanted to allow the player to create a character they wanted to play, rather than being forced into a particular role or identity.

What makes it unique?
I built the engine behind Yaffaif from the ground up, as I couldn't do what I wanted with any existing ones, and it works rather differently from most others.
  • It's fully playable with just a mouse, no need to type commands, but
  • If you want to type commands they auto-complete.
  • NPCs have their own lives and schedules, they don't just stand in place waiting for your interactions - to some extent they are little simulations.
  • Rather complex body modelling of the various characters to support the transformation theme.
  • Cross platform Windows/Mac/Linux.

What's your background?
I'm an electronics engineer and software developer by trade/training, and have been creating hobby games for nearly 40 years now. While my first adventure was hand-assembled, ran in less than 1k, and deftly subverted the system command prompt to do the parsing, Yaffaif is a very different beast that benefits from years of object oriented development and extreme programming techniques. Yes, it even has unit tests!

Why Patreon?

In short, life has thrown me a few curve balls in the last few years, and I'd like to be able to fund the ongoing development. I'd also like to engage with a broader audience and get feedback as it what is working and what isn't.
