“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”
– Mohammed Ali

Hi everyone!
In order to keep my music and message genuine, I am joining the Community-Supported Art (CSA) movement! Community is especially important to the integrity of my work and developing relationships with like-minded folks is central to my cause.

I don't want to rely on competitions and grants anymore to make meaningful art. For a small monthly donation, your contribution will allow me the opportunity to focus completely on music making and political activism to continue fighting against oppression, war, censorship, and bigotry, as well as fighting for workers rights, equality, unity, and peace!

Every month, a third of this amount will be donated to a different charity (I will let you know each month) that focuses on environmental issues, income inequality, and/or human rights.

Bio

Ohio-born Dorian Wallace is a composer, pianist, teacher, and activist. His work explores elements of the unconscious experience, deep political conscientiousness, performance art, and often features improvisational elements. He is co-founder and artistic director of new music collective, Tenth Intervention, and conductor of the improvisational septendectet, The Free Sound Ahn-somble, both based in New York City. He was most recently invited as a guest lecturer/performer to New York University’s Precarious Sounds / / Sounding Sanctuary conference in February 2018.

His compositions have been performed worldwide at venues such as The Greene Space at WNYC & WQXR, Pompidou Centre, Palais Jacques Coeur, The DiMenna Center for Classical Music, National Sawdust, Universidad de Costa Rica, and GK Arts Center. Wallace has composed and collaborated with artists including Robert Ashley, Seneca Black, The Cleveland Orchestra Piano Trio, Composers Concordance, Experiments In Opera, John King, Dave Liebman, Frank London, Matt Marks, Charlotte Mundy, New Vintage Baroque, Periapsis Music and Dance, Paul Pinto, RIOULT Dance, John Sanborn, Son Lux, Aleksandra Vrebalov, and Pamela Z.

A virtuoso pianist and improviser, Wallace performs with surrealist nightclub act Trystero, and is a founding member of the free improvisation quintet AmmoCake. Wallace is a typical autodidact - passionate, dedicated and driven; unbounded by traditional approaches, he blazes his own path forward. He is one of New York City's most notable accompanists for dance, playing ballet, contemporary, improvisation, and choreography dance classes at Barnard College of Columbia University, Martha Graham Dance Company, Juilliard, New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Ballet Hispanico, Kat Wildish Presents, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Doug Varone and Dancers, and many more.

In addition to composing and performing, Wallace is a dedicated educator, teaching lessons, lectures, and master classes in Ichonautics, his conceptual method of music philosophy, composition, improvisation, and mindfulness. He has taught this approach nationally and internationally, including Juilliard, Columbia University, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and Universidad de Costa Rica.

He studied composition, music theory, improvisation, and piano with Sebastian Birch, Pat Pace, Tom Janson, Frank Wiley, Mark Pakman, Donna Lee, and Chas Baker. He is currently enrolled at Montclair State University pursuing a degree in Music Therapy. Wallace has served 9 years in the US Army.

He currently lives in Harlem, New York with his partner and colleague, violinist Hajnal Pivnick.
