About

My introduction to the genre known as paranormal romance came when I found the novel Bitten, by Kelley Armstrong, on the shelf of a used bookstore. I have been a fan of horror fiction since I was a kid, but this book was something different. The monsters that had long been the antagonists of horror literature were now the protagonists of this genre. Vampires. Werewolves. Spirits. Witches. This appealed to me, as a gamer, because while there had been role-playing games that featured these same kinds of antagonists, the appeal to them wasn't as great for me.

Years after I first read Bitten, and other paranormal romance authors like Devon Monk and Gail Carriger, I came across the Fate Accelerated rules by Evil Hat Productions. These rules were what I needed for the game that I wanted to play. I have played these rules, slowly developing the feel that I need for Paranormal Friction, with a couple of different groups of gamers. We have played in worlds of witches, werewolves and lost ancient dieties. Now, after a change in life circumstances, I am coming back to Paranormal Friction, and I am looking for your support.

For this game I will draw upon a number of influences for my rules and setting designs, including comics, anime, movies, music and literature. My posts here will be a combination of rules, mechanics, setting and background, as well as the design philosophy of why I do what I do. In addition to posts about the game itself I will also make blog posts exploring what has inspired this game, and what you can do with it.

One of the main reasons for this Patreon is to get my ideas organized into a publishable format, and to eventually be able to pay for art to go with my words. Basically, I am looking for enough support that will allow me to free up the time that I need for writing, research and development so that I can finish this game. I do not expect this Patreon to become my full time job, but enough of a job to give me the time to work on it. I hope that you will be interested in helping me do that. Please keep in mind that Paranormal Friction is an unfinished work in progress. The rules are there, and the game is playable, but there are still some rough edges that I want to work out, and I would like to use funding from this Patreon to help pay for some developmental editing as well.

Patrons will have access to work in progress documents of the rules, design notes, blog posts and PDFs of finalized content, depending on how funding goes. There will also be a Discord server where patrons can play games run by myself, and other patrons, and ask questions of the process going into developing Paranormal Friction. This is a "pay when you join" Patreon because the initial draft of the game will be available to all patrons, regardless of their funding level. Future revisions, supplemental materials and future standalone games will be provided to patrons of certain levels only. Blog posts, and levels of access to the Discord server, will be available to all patrons.
Goals
$53.05 of $75 per month
When we reach $75 monthly, I will create some sort of exclusive content for backers at the Undercover Detective level and higher. This could be a PDF of game material, or a blog post of some sort. This will repeat each month that the Patreon funds at this level.
