“I can’t take this anymore!”

“Why is this happening to me?”

“Will I ever get a break?”

Sound familiar? It sure does to me. But now, when I look back on the most chaotic times of my life, and see that even though it seemed like things were totally out of control, there was a method to the madness. From the chaos, the pieces of life re-organized at a higher level, bringing me to a more connected space of awareness and intuition. With each storm, I discovered parts of myself that I wasn’t aware existed, and developed new skills that have allowed me to experience more gratitude and joy. The lesson I learned from these experiences is that instead of resisting the storm, I should welcome it, because it signals that personal growth.

I’ve been assigned so many labels over the course of my journey. I’ve been a popcorn popper, an ice cream scooper, a makeup salesgirl, and a college student. I’ve been a behavior aide, a special education teacher, a program specialist, a college instructor, and an educational consultant. I’ve been an undergrad, a grad student, a doctoral student, and a licensing candidate. I have enough letters after my name to spell a variety of words. Why weren’t these letters enough to spell, “enough,” or “happy?” Or, “self-worth?”

The premature birth of my son resulted in more labels. HELLP Syndrome Survivor, Preemie Mom, Divorced Mom, Single Mom, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and many more.

So many labels, and yet…the most important title I have been given is, "Jackson's Mom."

Being Jackson’s Mom has brought me back to myself, the person I was too busy to be, the person I had forgotten all about, until circumstances forced me to find her. It feels like I have emerged from a long state of hibernation, and it sure feels good to stretch and move.

As a single mom with extensive academic and professional experience in the areas of behavior, development, autism spectrum disorder, special education, higher education, and now post-traumatic stress disorder, I am uniquely positioned to support others as they navigate through their own storms. If your personal lighthouse has led you to this community, it is, most certainly, for a reason.

Welcome to the club!
